Hooking up an Apple TV to an HP monitor with no audio, and mirror from Airplay, where would the audio be heard.

I presently have a Mac Mini and a HP2311x monitor. There are speakers hook to my Mac Mini. I also have a MacBook Air, an iPad mini and an iPhone 5. I have Apple TV hooked up to my Home TV. I was thinking of getting another Apple TV for my home computer desk and hooking it up to the HP monitor. There is no audio in this monitor, so if I mirror from any of my other devices as well as my MacBook Air where would the audio go? I know you would need an audio system with an optical input and I know Airplay is usually sent to an Apple TV hooked to a HDTV, but if I send it to just a plain monitor using HDMI would the sound still come out of the device or MacBook Air? And Is there any way to hook computer speaker to the Apple TV? I don't beleive there is. Any ideas?

I have recently discovered a AGPtek Digital Optical Toslink to Analog adapter that works from the Apple TV to a sound source like powered computer speakers. It will also work with older sound systems that do not supports optical input. My latest advanture is trying to use an Apple TV with Airplay with a MacBook Air in "Clamshell" mode. It loses the mirroring when you close the cover. I am presently connected via a video cable, but was hoping to use an Apple TV.

Thanks for your help. I have talk to the Best Buy "Apple Solutions Consultant" recently and he claims if you are using OS X Mavericks you should be able to send the display to another display like a monitor or HDTV via Apple TV, even in the clamshell mode. Unforunately he was unable to demonstrate this on his systems at Best Buy. He did try pretty hard:) I have done a lot of experimenting, and have solved the sound problem. I total agree it seems very unlikely you could "Mirror" the display using AirPlay with the cover closed. I just got the impression that there were settings that could be changed to display the desktop to an external monitor, with the cover closed. It does appear, as you say, it can't be done.

I do appreciate you replying and your help. Thanks again. I'm just trying to justify getting a 2nd Apple TV to use in my home office. My setup right now is a MacBook Air, in clamshell mode. with a wired keyboard, Bluetooth mouse, HP 2311x monitor (connected with a DVI cable), a set of computer speaker plugged into the MacBook, and another set computer speaker (connected using an Airport Express for use with my MacBook, iPad and iPhone), and a USB backup drive plugged in. I know it is over kill, but my goal was to elimiate as many wires connected to the MacBook as possible.

Thanks again for your reply and help
