Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and make sure only the phone number is checked.

Basically, your iMessage settings have become slightly off due to the update.

Go into Settings -> Messages -> Send/Receive.

You should see your phone number and your email address. Given your description, I would imagine that only your Email Address is checked. If you CAN (it's probably greyed out), check your phone number off, and it should work.

Now, operating under the assumption that you can't just turn the phone number back on:

1.) Go into Settings -> Messages, and turn iMessage off.

2.) Go into Settings -> iTunes and Appstore, and tap on your Apple ID at the top, and tap 'Sign Out'

3.) Power your phone off completely (Press and hold the sleep/wake key, then swipe to power off).

4.) Power your phone back on.

5.) Go back to Settings -> iTunes and Appstore, and sign back into your Apple ID.

6.) Go back to Settings -> Messages, and turn iMessage back to ON. Wait for iMessage service to activate.

7.) Go into Send/Receive again, and verify that your phone number is now checked off.

8.) Send a text message to a friend with an iPhone to verify that the issue is resolved.

NOTE: If you do not know your Apple ID/Password, reset it at http://iforgot.apple.com.

You don't want to have your phone number unchecked. You actually want to use the phone number. So it's good that it's checked.

As for the other addresses, presumably e-mail. Uncheck all except for the one(s) that you want to use for iMessages. Technically you don't need any checked. Unless you are using an other Apple device. For example like me. I use my Mac Mini to send/receive iMessages. I needed to use an e-mail address. So I can send/receive iMessage on both my iPhone and Mac Mini. The other person wouldn't even know that I was on my Mac Mini. Other than the fact that I type so much faster on a full size keyboard. lol

I still can't send/receive text messages on my Mac Mini. So it has to be iMessages only.

I had the same problem as the original poster ... i was sending text messages through my icloud email address because in my settings my phone number was unknowingly unchecked. I resolved the problem and am now sending text messages via my actual number again ... but I am wondering, during the period while my phone was sending texts through my icloud, would that have eny effect on whether non-iphone users received my texts properly? I am asking because I had a few unreturned texts... and one of which i know was to a samsung galaxy user... Would they have received my texts as usual even though I had only my icloud address checked in my settings? Just wondering if maybe you had any insight into this! thanks in advance.

And also .. if they did receive them, I wonder how would it appear on their phone? I wonder because I'm guessing the two phones aren't compatable, and even though we had a past messaging history when my phone was using its number to text message, it would then probably come up as a new contact because the galaxy would have no recognition of my icloud address...

sorry, just trying to figure who got what and how it appeared while this was unintentionally how my settings were! Any help would be appreciated.

These steps did work for me and the icloud address no longer appears when new text conversations are created. However, for existing conversations I am not able to send messages. It is "undeliverable" when I attempt to send a text both via imessage and SMS text on pre-existing conversations. I have important existing texts conversations that can not be erased.

How can I keep my text conversations and be able to respond + they NOT appear to be sent from icloud? PLEASE HELP!

why do my texts come from my icloud after the ios7 update?
