why can't I force-quit a transfer of an item to trash...it will not complete the action...it is stuck and I cannot shut down. I thought to shut down to fix my other problems...

Try using the power switch to shut the computer off and then turn it back on for a restart.

Try relaunching the Finder. Hold down option and right-click on the Finder icon in Dock. There should be a "Relaunch" option in the menu.
