Having trouble importing some photos. I get a message saying insufficient space even though I have 90 GB left on a 500 GB HD and I'm trying to import less than 32 GB.
What has me confused is that when I look under Disk Utility it say I only have 55 GB available. I figured that should still be enough to allow the import, but something else is not right.
I'm running 10.8.5 on a MacBook Pro.
Any suggestions?

Generally, you need to keep 10-15% free space on your hard drive to let it function properly.
I don't think this is the issue here. I've freed up more space and still have the problem. What I'm wondering is why there is such a hugh difference between the amount of free space I see when I use command I on the HD versus what the Disk Utility app says I have. The Disk Utility says I have 55 GB and the HD says over 100 GB.
I'm guessing whatever is taking up this space might be the problem.
See the very bottom of the first linked article. It says the discrepancies are normal.

From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Time Machine
If the padlock icon is closed, click it to unlock the settings and authenticate. Turn Time Machine OFF, then turn it backON and close the preference pane. Wait a few minutes, then try the operation again.
Thanks. Small differences do occur, but 50 GB seems excessive. Turns out Time Machine seemed to be the problem, even though I had the computer connected to the external HDs. I had it back up again and turned off TM and ended up with a difference of 20 MB instead of the 50 GB.
