Streaming music from Spotify, Youtube, Soundcloud or from chrome to stereo: I stream all of my music rather than using itunes. Does Apple TV allow me to easily stream wahtever audio is playing on my MacBook Air to my stereo?

Welcome to the Apple Community.

Unless you use iTunes you can only stream audio from your Mac if your Mac supports mirroring.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.

Thanks for your quick response. My set up would meet these requirements. I would be using the Apple TV 2 wihtout a TV initially. I imagine that I can 'mirror' audio without the use of a televison? Is it your understanding that the qulity of audio played back via mirroring would be on par with audio played back via itunes (assuming the bitrate is the same)? Thanks again for your help.
