What does this mean: Check to verify that your TV's video input matches the HDMI connection.

I have followed the instructions and connected the AppleTV to the TV and power. When I turn on the TV, it is the TV, no Apple product. Power is on the AppleTV. I must conclude that I have no idea how to select the correct TV input. What does that mean? How do I do it?
