network print problem

My old MBP died alas and buying a new one I saw to my dismay that I couldn't remain with 10.6 as it came with 10.8 by default.

One of the main features of this release is that I can't print anymore via the network with my other MBP 10.7. The Laserjet 1300 printer is shared, I can print no problem from my USB connection and is seen by the other computer. The job just sits there with "trying to connect to the computer". Actually logging into it is no problem; A to B and B to A.

I checked the HP site and there are no drivers listed for 10.8, any clues? Thanx in advance for any help

Hi Linc and thanx for the help. Alas, this did not help. Deleted all queues as per the helpful link. Reset to share, went to the other computer, delted the queues and after a while it finally saw the printer under DEFAULT.

It then got the required paramters, I set it up as DEFAULT printer, LOCKED it so as to prevent any changes, went to print to specified printer and it just sits there.

Printer light is IDLE but nothing is printed just sits there "trying to connect to printer".

Thanx for any other pointers.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Select

/var/log cups error_log

from the hierarchical list on the left side of the Console window. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the time of the last failed printing attempt. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Hi Linc;

Again thank you for your help. Here is (part) of the dump you requested from the /var/log error.log

I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

ls -@Oaen /L*/P*/Ic* | open -ef

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).

A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

Back up all data.

Please enter the following command in the Terminal window as you did before:

sudo chflags nohidden /L*/P*/Ic*

You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning. Quit Terminal.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/Library/Printers

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services Open

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open. Inside there should be a file named "Icon" and a folder named "Icons". Move the file — not the folder — to the Trash. You may be prompted for your login password.

After that, try printing. If there's no change, reboot and try again. Still failing, post any new messages from the error log (not the ones already posted.)

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

When it's done I'll try and see whether this finxes it and if not proceed with your suggestion. Again thank you so much for your help!
