Phantom app updates

Using iPad2 at 6.1.2 and for the past week or so thr App Store icon has shown updates available which I have been able to apply. However several times I have seen that update available but when I click on the App Store icon it shows the number of apps with updates briefly but the App Store will say all apps are up to date and the Update Available count will disappear.

I too have this problem on my iphone 3GS. I suspect it is due to updates for apps that have now released an IOS7 only version.

Apple see that an app you have has an update and update the update count. Then when you try to load it is sees it is not for you and forgets about it. I think Evernote has an update that falls into this category. A few hours later they check and see that there are updates for you and on and on it goes.

As IOS7 will never be available for the iphone 3GS I think I am stuck with it as I can't see Apple seeing it as a priority. They would prefer to sell you a new device running IOS7.

There is a glitch and I've yet to see an easy way around it. If you normally sync to a computer, you can download and install your updates via iTunes on that computer.

I tried to purchase an app and was asked my security questions since iTUnes didn't recognize my device. (which it should have because it did before iOS7). I could only answer one right and then when I tried to reset my questions the mail never came so I ended up having to call Apple and have them manually reset my security questions.

So maybe try that, find a free app, try to install it, go through the verification (and make sure you have/know your secret questions) and see if that frees things up. After I reset my questions, I can now download app updates normally.

It's like Apple's servers 'forgot' a lot of devices and until you force the servers to remember you, there's this limbo between 'we know you need up dates' and 'who the heck are you? I don't know you' and people get caught in the middle.

Found out which apps they were.I used the method mentioned by acerace113 here http://forums.imore.com/ipod/262909-phantom-ipod-app-store-updates.html One app was Evernote and another app was Mailbox. I deleted Mailbox from the iPad since I never use it. I may do the same with Evernote.

Despite this post http://thenextweb.com/apple/2013/09/17/apple-begins-allowing-users-running-legac y-ios-builds-to-download-older-versions-of-apps/ which indicates that Apple allows you to download older version of apps, once I click on download the iPad goes through the process of installing the app but it still shows UPDATE in the Apps Store Purchased page and thereby still shows up in the phantom update count.
