Is it possible to save my icloud backups to a local external harddrive? Note, Ive archived my .mac/me.com email completely and want to keep my old iphone/ipad backups.

You can only access an iCloud backup by restoring it to your iOS device. You can't download it to your computer. If you want to keep old backups, you'll have to create the backup on your computer using iTunes.
