sms 70 characters

Hello,

In general, my iphone4 sends text messages as 160 characters a message, but very often it offers me 70 characters per text message. That means, that if I send a text message of 150 characters I am being charged, by the mobile operator, for 3 messages, instead for 1. Why does this happen?
