keeps going to sleep

Partners 2008 Macbook boots up to login screen and then instantly goes to sleep and will not wake up.

I have tried taking the battery out, pressing to power button, replace the battery and then boot. Still nothing

We have also noticed a slight burning smell coming from behind the keys that hasn't been there before
