Installing software on Mac Os X 10.0.4

I just got this used apple computer and it came with Mac Os X 10.0.4 Discs. I installed the CD and got all my information done. I got some other CDs like Keynote, Itunes 3, iphoto 2 and imovie 3. When I try to install the CD it says "this software cannot be installed on this computer". I even tried to download stuff to install like Flash Player, Opera 9. Firefox and others but when I click on them it starts then says "unable to verify (insert filename.dmg)". What is going on. I feel like I am being restricted at this moment. What can i do?

Well, you are being restricted, in a sense, but it's for your own good. The other software you've tried to install is not compatible with the version of OS X that you've got. For example, iTunes 3 requires OS X 10.1.4 at the least, and this version isn't supported anymore for purchasing music.

So, your best option is to upgrade your system to either 10.3.9 or 10.4.6, depending on your sytsem specs, like hard drive size and available memory (512 MB is the absolute minimum you need to run Panther with decent performance). If you can give details on that it would be helpful.

You can buy Panther (10.3) at retail from a variety of vendors, often for less than the $129 retail price. Apple does not sell this anymore. Once you've got that installed, you can use Software Update to bring your system current to 10.3.9, which is the last version in Panther.

Or, you can go with Tiger (10.4) at $129 on DVDs (if your Mac can't read a DVD, then you'd have to pay extra to exchange the DVDs for CDs through Apple) and then download the Combo Updater to bring your system up to 10.4.6. It's a good idea to wait to see how the new 10.4.7 update shakes out for a few weeks before you upgrade to that.

Hope this helps,

Mulder

Hi jrricky! And Welcome To Discussions!

10.0.4, was more or less a BETA of OS X.
It is well advised to upgrade.

In tandem with Mulder's right on advice, you will find some additional info, interspersed below.
Some of this may be repetitive, as this is a standard document, that I have posted for quite some time..

Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.

The point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.6 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.

Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).

Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.

Jaguar Full Retail Version CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.

Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
More info here Tip: Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs

Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 combo update,

or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final edition of either OS.

If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the 10.4.7 Combo Update.

You'll find System Requirements in these links:

Panther

Tiger

Additionally,

"Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."
