What determines the programs that open at startup?

Environment: mac os 10, Version 10.7.5

2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo

This is my desktop computer. I've noticed that it has started opening both Firefox and Chrome when I start the computer. I know that there is a checkbox when I log off/sign off that indicates that windows should be reopened.

1) I closed Firefox and Chrome

2) I left the checkbox checked "Reopen windows when logging off"

3) I logged off and logged back in.

Chrome and Firefox opened.

Chrome and Firefox still opened.

This is trivial but annoying. I do recall that Windows had a startup folder, but I did not think that there was an equivalent folder.

I've gone through the options on the browsers themselves and I don't see anything that defaults to "open at startup"

Why do these two browsers insist on opening at startup?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

System Preferences - Users - Login Items is one place to check. If you see a lot of log in items highlight the ones you don't want then press the - symbol below to remove them.
