Why my Macbook Air doesn't finds Camera for Skype whereas it works for FaceTime

I have understood from Apple Support pages that after the lastest Mountain Lion upgrade on MacBook Air, the inbuilt camera has stopped working for 32bit applications like Skype. Apple's suggestion is to use an external camera for these 32bit apps. However camera works fine with Facetime.

Is there a different way to solve the problem other than attaching an external camera to Air, as it defeats the purpose of Air. Not all my friends have an apple product to FaceTime with them, this is a showstopper for me.
