When attempting to download on iplayer it asks if I have installed BBCiPlayer Downloads, which I have done (again) so I press yes, continue downloading which then goes to a grey Safari page which says it can't open the specified address - because Mac OS X doesn't recognise addresses starting with 'bbc-ipd: what can I do?

iPlayer is getting very finicky about browsers and Macs. Is yours an Intel Mac or a PPC Mac?
well from what I can see on the about this mac it has a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, whatever that means? thanks for trying to help by the way
In that case you should consider upgrading from Leopard (which you show as using) to Snow leopard, which will also update Safari.
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store: in the UK:

When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:

Check via Software Update whether further updates are required.

Then I would suggest going to the FAQ page on iPlayer which includes a contact link to the BBC.
