Q: I have an enormous amount of Albums from my CDs on my PC and understood rightly or wrongly that I could put them on iTunes Match for an annual subscription but then it looked as though I would be unable to place them on iTunes Match. Advice please.

iTunes Match is limited to libraries with a maximum of 25,000 non-purchased tracks. 

When you say "enormous," are you above that?  If so, you cannot use Match.

How do I go about paying for the iTunes Match please?

 

You pay for it from your balance or from the credit card that Apple has on file for your account.  The price is $24.99 per year (USA rate).

Go to the Store menu item on the menu bar, and choose "Turn on iTunes Match, as shown below. 

If by any chance you don't see the menu bar ("File, Edit, View, Controls, Store, Help"), first enable it by using CTRL+B.
