How do i print in color in Preview

I am still trying to figure out OS 10.8.5. Seems like all the settings have been hidden and made a lot less user friendly.

Here is a frustrating one.

There used to be in the print menu from Preview a drop down with a cryptic name to it that I could never remember and under that you could tell it to print in color or in grayscale. All this functionality has apparently been removed.

I have a color document that I am sending to a color HP cp1700 printer and it will only print in grayscale. There is no setting anywhere on this computer where I would be able to tell it color or black and white.

Some of those print options may be a function of which printer and driver you have.

Anyway, on my Preview Print dialog, there is a checkbox for B&W; also, there is a Show Details button with more options. I have an HP officejet Pro 8600.

There is no checkbox for B&W. Show Details is on.

I downloaded the latest driver (for OX 10.5) it still prints only in Black and White.

I need this to work and I will not accept the answer that it is a print driver issue. Printers are expensive. It is unacceptable for the companies to phase them out to increase revenue. If the printer can physically operate for 80 years then it is the moral obligation of both Apple and HP to ensure that that 80 year old printer will still work!

It's a suggestion that you leave feedback for apple on that page.

If you just want to vent, then you can do that here, but it won't do much good, other than maybe making you feel better.

Thank you for the Gutenprint link. Unfortunately, this did not work.

I guess this is what they call planned obselecensnce. Im going to have to take a printer that works perfectly and throw it in the trash because there is no driver available. Thats real classy.

Have you tried to download a new driver? Google this printer plus driver and find the one that matches your system. I bet it will work. There are several drivers available.

What part didn't work? The driver, or it doesn't support color, either. It is listed as supported by Gutenprint. Did you select the Gutenprint driver for your printer?

That printer is over a decade old. Impressive that it still turns on.

Interesting that HP continues to write Windows 7 drivers for it, but they haven't written an OS X driver for over six years. Nothing yet for Win 8.

George- I have not found any driver for this printer for mac.

Barney- A decade is old for a printer? I had an HP from the 90s that I used for 15 years. I had beaten it with a bat and dropped it out a window moving. the entire case was destroyed, you had to use a paperclip against the circuit board because there were no buttons. It never stopped working. I threw it away because it was to heavy to move.

Five years is old for an inkjet. But that is neither here nor there. What was the problem with the Gutenprint driver?

That is the name of my printer, yes. I downloaded and installed gutenprint 5.2.9 the other day when Arthur posted it here. It does not seem to do anything at all. I cannot find any method by which to assign a driver to a printer. That is not an option in Print & Scan.

How about trying a factory reset on your printer, then delete and reinstall the driver.

aah ha. I guess that was because i was trying to edit the old one. You have to delete the printer and add it again as a new one, then you can change the driver.

I have color!
