Can not connect Apple TV to a TV equipped with a DV-I port.

Hello everyone and sorry for my bad English.

I just bought an Apple TV, wanting to connect it to an older model plasma TV (2009), equipped with a DVI port.

I premise that the DVI port is functioning correctly (video only, of course), since I use with a TV decoder (http://assistance.numericable.fr/Installation-TV-Decodeur-HD-Sagem-ADSL.html) that provides an HDMI output. (HDMI to DVI converter)

Below is the configuration at my disposal, which, unfortunately does not work:

1) Apple TV (bought today)

2) Plasma TV, brand PHILIPS, model 42PF5320/10 (http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/cpindex.pl?ctn=42PF5320/10&hlt=Link_ProductIn formation&mid=Link_ProductInformation&scy=IT&slg=ITA)

3) 1080p Standard HDMI Cable (http://www.retrak.co/Products/tabid/80/ProdID/218/Language/en-US/CatID/14/Retrac table_Standard_HDMI_Cable_with_Mini_HDMI_Micro_HDMI_and_DVI_Adapters.aspx) to carry the video signal from the AppleTV to TV (HDMI to DV-I)

4) Audio digital connection cable, brand VALUELINE, mod. VLMP25000B1.99 (http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B009OXRFDY) to carry the digital audio signal from the AppleTV to the Optical Stereo RCA converter.

5) Audio connection cable, brand VALUELINE, mod. VLMP22200W1.00 (http://www.amazon.fr/Valueline-VLMP22200W1-00-C%C3%A2ble-Blanc/dp/B009OXRUFC) to carry the analogue audio signal from the Optical Stereo RCA convert to TV.

5) Optical Stereo RCA convert, to convert a toselink signal to an analogue stereo signal (http://www.konigelectronic.com/en_us/audio-video/cables-connectors/Electronic%2B Units/1119471)

So, recapitulating... :

___ Video HDMI Cable ___---> TV (DV-I port)

Apple TV --->

___ Audio Digital Cable ___---> Optical Stereo Convert ---> TV (Audio Jack 3,5 port)

Well, I just connected the Apple TV to the TV, only on video, and already does not work: the screen is black and the monitor shows the message "No Signal."

If I disconnect the cable from the Apple TV and connect it to TVdecoder, everything works perfectly. So I am certain that the DV-I port on the TV and the HDMI cable work perfectly.

Of course, I have not tried to connect the sound, since the video signal does not work yet.

I am saddened and very discouraged. Can you suggest a solution, if any? There maybe some protection system on the Apple TV that does not allow to carry the signal on a port DV-I?

Thank you for the patience that you have had up to this point and thank you for any replies.

Hi Winston Churchill. Thanks for your quick reponse.

I'm not very technically expert, but I think that my TV is compatible with these standards.

Here you can find the manual in English (http://download.p4c.philips.com/files/4/42pf5320_10/42pf5320_10_dfu_eng.pdf)

This is the representation of the connection panel, with details of the DVI connection

Unfortunately, it really isn't very clear from that manual exactly what the TV supports.

You may wish to try the following:

Press and hold the menu and the up button simultaneously on the remote for six seconds, the Apple TV should then begin to cycle through the various resolutions available to it. If you see a picture appear up on your screen, use the remote to scroll down to the OK option and select it.

Hi Winston.

I'm searching for a solution of my problem, but I can not find information about the compatibility HTTP, as you you suggested in your post.

Do you happen to know whether the TV set is capable of handling HTTP over DVI...

Rather, I found information about HDCP. Well my TV is avowedly compatible with this standard.

This is an extract of the technical characteristics:

Connectique du téléviseur Plasma PHILIPS 42PF5320

Entrées Vidéo : DVI • Péritel (x2) • S-Vidéo • Composite

Entrée DVI compatible HDCP (protection contre la copie).

Péritel Ext 1: Audio G/D, Entrée/sortie CVBS, RVB
Péritel Ext 2: Audio G/D, Entrée/sortie CVBS, Entrée S-Vidéo
Entrées Audio : Jack Stéréo • RCA Stéréo
Autres entrées : Antenne TV
Sorties Audio : Casque Stéréo

At this point I can only think that the problem is in the cable.

Probably my HDMI cable is not compatible with HDCP, as suggested in the information from Apple (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4428?viewlocale=fr_FR).

Before I give up, I'm thinking of buying the cable Belkin, officially proposed on the Apple Store (http://store.apple.com/fr/product/HA835ZM/A/c%C3%A2ble-hdmi-vers-dvi-d-de-belkin -(2%C2%A0m)?fnode=51)

Sorry, that was my error, I use dictation for these communities and it's getting so good that I'm getting a bit lazy in checking what it types, that should be HDCP, not HTTP.

All cables should work with HDCP. But HDMI cables generally can be a little dodgy (you'll need a high speed cable)

HDCP might be a problem in the longer term if your TV didn't support it over DVI, but I wouldn't have thought it would stop you seeing the menu screen.

If you are able to test the Apple TV and cable on a TV with an HDMI input and find that it works, try setting the output to 720p 60 Hz before disconnecting and attaching back to the original TV.

Hi Atashi. I have just discovered your post and confirm that I have exactly the same problem with the same Philips TV. Fortunately I have not purchased the Apple TV yet. Can you please confirm if you have been able to resolve the problem and get the things going. If you have, would you please be kind enough to share with me how you did it. As my Philips TV is hardly used, I am trying to avoid buying a new one just to be able to use the Apple TV.
