The iTunes store is an application in your Applications folder (its'icon should be in your dock as well) - is that what you have tried?
iTunes.app sounds as though you are trying to access an iDevice app?
I am on my imac and when I click on the itunes icon on my dock, it opens. Butwhen I try to access the itunes store from one of the menu choices I get the error message that says Itunes cannot access the itunes store
Choosing the store within the sidebar of iTunes does not work either? Frankly I don't know why it wouldn't - I have no problem connecting here.

well creating a new user did not help. Downloading itunes again did not help BUT when Istarted up in safe mode I was able to get into the itunes store.
What is going on?
Well, you can always pull the plist from your main user account, and see if that fixes it.
Sorry Tommy but I am not sure what you are suggesting? what is a plist?
It's a preference file for your itunes that's located in your hidden library, under the folder preferences. Move the file com.apple.itunes.plist to your desktop, restart your computer, then try to get itunes to work. If it does, delete the itunes plist.

Thanks for explaining..I tried this and still no success. I even reinstalled latest iTunes version. Now it just hangs while accessing store. No error message. iTunes will access iTunes Store in the safe mode though.
Very frustrating.
That is odd. If you can access it in safe mode, then the plist pull should've fixed it in normal mode. You can always re-install the os. To do that w/o erasing your hard drive, click here. This is for 10.5 (which your profile says is what you have). If you have a different version, please post it here, and i'll link the instructions for it

Well...no help.
I did the reinstall and had to reinstall latest version of itunes as well to access the application. I have the same error message.
This is maddening.
BTW I can access itunes from my devices. ios 7.02 iphone 5 and my ipad mini ios 6.
I have tried disabling them also .
