Is there a way to control "sleep" in iOS7?

Hi everybody,

Is there a "sleep" control on iOS7? In other words, if I use my iOS device and I don't turn it off and just leave it sitting there on the table, is there a way to control how long it takes until the screen dims and then eventually goes to sleep (where the screen goes black and appears as if it is shut down)?

My mom's iPad 4 has an Apple brand cover (where the iPad turns on and off as you open/close the cover), and if she leaves the cover open then the iPad screen just stays on (bright). I haven't sat there and timed it, but I know it stays on for quite a long time.

Is there a way to control these things in iOS7? Thanks!

I was playing around with Auto-lock earlier, so I'm not sure if that's what I'm looking for or not. The reason is, let's say you set it for "1 Minute". Then after one minute, it turns off and "locks" itself----correct? What if you just want it to go to sleep for purposes of saving your battery, but you do NOT want to lock it? This is for a person who lives alone and is sitting right next to the device within arm's reach, and there is nobody else around who can touch it----thus, there is no need for it to "lock" every minute.

Is there a way for it to sleep without being locked and requiring a passcode to open it up again?

Thanks.

Okay, I'm a bit confused here:

If I set Auto-Lock to "Never", then the device will never require a passcode. That's fine----that works for us!

However, that brings me back to the original question. Can we control "sleep" on the device? If you turn on your device and use some random application, and then just place it down on the table and watch it, you will see that sooner or later the screen darkens, and shortly after that, it goes black and goes to sleep. How do we control this? On my iPhone, the screen darkens and then goes black all within about 30 seconds or less (I've never timed it---I'm just guessing). On my iPad, it won't go dark for at least a half hour---it just sits there with a bright screen and never dims or goes to sleep. Why the radical difference between the iPhone 5S and the iPad 4 (both with iOS7)?

Is there a way to control "sleep" with these devices? Thanks.

Smitty195,

Not sure if you ever figured this out. I was looking at my phone figured it out so that I could clarify. The answers above didn't really make sense themselves.

Under Settings>General>Auto Lock ...... This will make your phone "sleep" after the time specified (go to black screen). This has little to do with the Passcode. This is just to make your phone "sleep".

Under Settings>General>Passcode Lock ..... This will determine how long before your phone asks for a Passcode when you "Slide to unlock".

If you set your phone to "sleep" ("Auto Lock") after 1 minute, and set your "Passcode Lock" to "Require Passcode" After 15 min., your phone will "sleep", and when you wake it up, if 15 minutes has not passed, you will "Slide to unlock", but not have to input your Passcode.

I hope this helps to clarify!

Thanks,
