Q: how to use time capsule with bt homehub 3

I am awaiting a new Time Capsule 3TB to replace an existing 1TB TC, now too small for my needs. In my current setup, I have a British Telecom BT Homehub 3 for my internet connection and wireless provision. The TC connects to the wireless network, and used as a Time Machine.

I was considering using the new TC to provide the wireless network and somehow turn off the home hub's wireless output.

Is that possible?

Is it a good idea?

    Yes, and Yes. .

But you don't even have to turn off the HH3 wireless.. leave it going as a guest network because there is one issue in this setup .. no guest.

Simply plug the WAN port of TC into the HH3 with ethernet..

Set up the TC to bridge mode.

This is router bridge not wireless bridge btw.

Setup wireless now as you prefer.. but I recommend you stick to standards rather than Apple defaults.. so all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

Ok thanks for that. So would I keep the existing wireless network (with password on hh3 box) as it is for use for guests and create another network in the TC with my own made up password for myself (and family)?

Would there be any conflicts in having 2 systems generating wireless signals?

Yes.. setup the TC for your family and use that with a different name (SSID) and password.

No, there are no conflicts.. the HH3 is only 2.4ghz anyway and the TC will auto detect which channel is being used by the HH3 and use a different one.. almost all wireless made today does this.. but if you like and do run into trouble you can manually set channels on both.. this is trivial. Set HH3 to channel 1 and TC to channel 11 or 13 in the UK.
