I have partitioned my HD and want to install Snow Leopard from original disc onto the new partition, but the computer will not boot up from the disc. Whether I hold C or Option down at start-up, it only gets as far as the gray screen and the ball spinning forever.

Are you using the original grey System Install DVD that shipped with your MacBook?
Not sure what "grey" system means, but it is the original 10.6.3 Install Disk, yes.

It must be grey in color, not white, not black, no picture of a cat, bearing the words "Mac OS X Install DVD" and the name of your hardware e.g. "MacBook". It shipped with your Mac.

That isn't the original install disc as the one that came with the computer would be Grey in color, a very drab looking disc, however, if that was purchased from Apple and not a copy of another disc with just a label stuck on it, it should work. However, if the disc were damaged then you would have the same problem you are having. I would try to see if you can get another disc and try that (If you know someone that might have one). If that doesn't work, then take it to a Genius Bar and have them look at it, they may be able to help you out.
The one you require shipped with your Mac. Use it to partition your HD and install its original OS, then use the one in your picture to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
Computer came with grey OS 5 disc...I'll try that. My Snow Leopard works fine on main partition.
Yes, start with the 5 discs that came with the computer. Get that installed, then you can always update to Mountain Lion using the disc that you have in the picture and get it going that way.
The original grey 10.5 discs get ejected automatically when I try to reboot with them.

I suggest you "clone" the main partition to the other one, so you can at least boot from it. After you do that you can easily change its contents.
If your original discs are defective, you can order a replacement set from Apple.
