Q: Can I use Touch ID instead of the 4-digit passcode to unlock my my phone?

Can I use Touch ID instead of the 4-digit passcode to unlock my my phone?  I would prefer to use this at my lock screen instead of typing a 4-digit password.  I stinks that I cannot use the Touch ID without have a password activated.

The above post is incorrect, Touch ID requires a passcode be enabled.

Expanding on what wjosten said, you must set a passcode but then can use just your fingerprint to unlock your iPhone except if 1) you don't unlock the iPhone for forty-eight hours; 2) you restart the iPhone or 3) you need to enter in a new fingerprint or change the passcode. In any of those three scenarios you need to enter the passcode. Otherwise your fingerprint is all you need.

    Regards.

The issue for me is I could not figure out why it was asking for my passcode when I had given it my fingerprint. If you hit the home button to wake the iPhone, why is it still asking for my passcode? It isn't clear. The conceptual leap I didn't make was, when you have the passcode screen, use your fingerprint THEN. Your fingerprint is used in lieu of the passcode. Bingo. It works.
