I have just been given a macbook pro mid 2010 17 inch by a friend and i erased the hardrive and went to re install the os x but when i get to the screen to sign into the apple id nothing happens, i just get the spinning icon forever

Internet recovery or standard recovery?
A 2010 MBP originally came with Snow Leopard (10.6). Install that first and then update it to 10.6.8. Then access the App store and PURCHASE Mt. Lion and download it to the MBP. I suspect that you are trying to download Mt. Lion that is registered to the original owner.

Call Apple customer support (number at the bottom of this page), have your MBP serial number ready and they will send you replacements. There is a charge.
