iOS 7 Deleting Messages

Hey everyone, so I downloaded iOS 7 when it came out and I noticed a new thing how it stores your messages to your phone and it takes up space. That's fine with me but the only problem is that everytime I try deleting a conversation it deletes it but I try pressing on a different convo it either doesn't open or it freezes. But if it does open it's a blank convo. So I hard reset my phone or just restart it thinking it'll solve the problem but it doesn't. Instead the messages are still there and it's like I never deleted them. Any tips or help? Thanks guys I appreciate it.

My son is having this same problem on his iPhone 5s with iOS 7. He has not tried a restore from backup or a restore to factory settings yet. I have not been convinced that either of these would be a definitive cure from what I've read. This is a real problem and apparently has not been adequately addressed by the company yet. Does anyone have any current info about this problem? Has anyone troubleshot this on the phone with AppleCare or with a Genius at an Apple Store? Thanks.

So months after anyone has responded to this thread and with the impending release of iOS8, what does it matter.

Either do the restores or wait for the release of iOS8. This cannot possibly be an important issue or something as simple as a restore or restore as new would have been tried just to see if it resolved the issue.

If you want to see what AppleCare or one of the Geniuses have to say, contact them yourself. I'm not trying to be rude, but frankly you come across as someone unwilling to help themselves and wanting others to do everything for you.

It is not your position to decide what matters to a poster on this discussion site. As far as iOS 8, you are not supposed to discuss upcoming products either. As far as posting on this thread, I did a search of my problem and found this thread. It is recommended to look for other reports and discussions of a problem before you post as new.

Restoring from backup and restoring as new are not innocuous procedures. They are time consuming, have not been shown to help this problem, and may create other problems. It is really a shotgun approach and not a true solution.

Your saying that you are not trying to be rude does not excuse your extreme rudeness in characterizing me as unwilling to help myself. Please behave more politely in the future to users on this site who are looking for help. If you think someone is undeserving of such, then simply don't respond.

You've been offered a way to possibly resolve the issue. If your only reason for not wanting to do it is because its time consuming that's your loss. As for it being an "innocuous procedure" that makes no sense.

innocuous |iˈnäkyo͞oəs|adjectivenot harmful or offensive: it was an innocuous question.

As long as you have your data backed up, they are quite innocuous procedures, if, by that, you mean harmless. And they are far less frustrating and time consuming than dealing with a phone that doesn't work properly. Unless you have a hardware issue, restoring the phone from new will solve this problem as it will reload the system software and return the phone to its out of the box condition. Did your phone work properly at that point? And, again, as long as your data is properly backed up, restoring doesn't create any new problems.

You can make an appointment at the Genius Bar where, as part of troubleshooting the phone, they will restore it as new. It's standard procedure.

This thread should light up again with the release of iOS 8 and the inordinate amount of space needed for an install for users with 8G/16G memory iPhones. My daughter has a 5C with 4.1G of iMessages/SMS/MMS, deleting is unacceptably/painfully slow. The slow delete behavior is not intuitive to non-technical users which creates compound issues because users start doing things that interrupt the delete process via, restarts and restores.

There is a very simple solution to get around what you stated was painfully slow.

Plug the device into a computer running iTunes and update iOS on the device. There is no need to delete anything on the device.

Then, in iOS8, go to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages and select either 30 days or 1 year.

I've never personally understood the desire or seen what the big deal is about OTA updates... just a great way for something to go wrong and potentially brick the device. Considering most users cannot seem to be bothered to backup regularly, it's also a great way to increase the risk of losing data. The upside to updating via iTunes on the computer is it does a backup prior to the update.
