Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

Oct 5, 2013 8:53 AM in response to AnaMusicby bradbort,I have the same issue, and tried the reset, but no joy. I've also tried giving the iphone a permanent address on my router, in case it was having trouble waking up, to see if that worked. I should know by Sunday AM, but I suspect this has something to do with iCloud, since everything was working fine until the 20th (last time it backed up on its own, without my havint to click "backup now."

Oct 5, 2013 1:09 PM in response to Maureen07by Maureen07,I ended up having to trouble shoot with apple. If you go to settings - general - reset - reset all settings and reset your phone back to the factory settings (it won't delete your contacts or pictures etc). When I charged my phone last night my phone backed up with iCloud. Only bad part is any settings you had (such as pass lock, notifications, etc) go back to the original way so you have to go back and change things again.

Oct 5, 2013 1:12 PM in response to Maureen07by AnaMusic,So is this what fixed your issue...
Reset all settings
Settings > General > Reset > Reset all Settings.
This will return all iDevice settings to factory defaults... you will not lose any data.... But you will have to re-enter all of the device settings

Oct 6, 2013 5:50 AM in response to AnaMusicby bradbort,I tried this. It did not work.
Basically, the phone is not "waking up" at night to backup. Once I manually wake it, it backs ups a few minutes later. Very strange. I tried to assign a permanent IP address in the router, but this made no difference.
I can't tell if this is a router problem, or an icloud problem. It is affecting ALL my i devices (iphone 5, ipad 2, and opod touch).
Also, when I reset, MOST, of my data was not lost, but I did lose all my photos.

Oct 6, 2013 2:58 PM in response to Maureen07by bradbort,I'm Glad that worked for you.
Just to be clear, are you sure it is backing up overnight, when you leave it alone, or is it backing up right after you wake it for the first time in the AM? You can tell if you look at the time stamp under the icloud feature on the phone.
What I am seeing is no backup from sleep mode, but once I wake it and read my email, it auto backups soon after that.I'm thinking I might be having some sort of router incompatability issue. I have Apple 2nd level support working on it.
By the way, the photos that I lost were not the ones I took with the iPhone, Rather, when I reset, I lost the photos that I had imported from other sources. Apple's warning message needs to be a bit more specific about that .

Oct 8, 2013 7:43 AM in response to bradbortby bradbort,I finally resolved this problem. In my case, I swapped my router form an netgear r6300 to a netgear r7000. Apparently, some routers have issues with devices that go into a sleep mode, and then occassionally need to wake up to do such things as backup to iCloud. I've had similar issues with other routers and nest thermostats, where they only acted properly once I assigned a permanent address to the thermostat.
So, if the solution above does not work, consider updating the firmware for, and then swapping your router to a newer model.
