We sent a whole load of photos to our wifi brother printer and can't seem to cancel them. Switching off the printer gets a message to cancel or retry but no matter how many times we say cancel it starts the queue of photos again.

Actually there is a print queue function in iOS .
Double press home button to enter task manager scroll left select the print icon Press Cancel Print at bottom of window .

I think you'd have to clear the print queue on the printer itself as there doesn't appear to be any printer queue on the iPad that I'm aware of.
If unsure check your printer documents for how to cancel a print job(s).

That fixed ir! It would have taken me a month of Sundays to find that. Almost back to sqaure one having reset factory settings and reinstalled Brother App on iPad whilst strugling to find the answer.
