IMac has lost recovery HD

When I tried to access the recovery HD upon startup (pressing command-R) the recovery HD option did not show. When trying to download recovery assistant, message came up saying "The recovery HD on this computer is not present", which confirms its absence.

Should I re-install OS X 10.8.5 to get the recovery HD back on my computer?

As the error message stated: "The recovery HD on this computer is not present"

Just to be sure, I've shut down computer 6 times and held down Command-R, Command-R-Option, and just plain option. The recovery option does not show up because it's not there.

There is no recovery HD on this computer.

Question: should I download and re-install OS X 10.8.5?
