Erasing all data from a Macbook late 2009

I want to sell my old Macbook white, and was following instructions to install the original disk holding the c key in order to then use the disk utility function to erase data. However, when I try to install the OS X from the disk, it says I cannot install that version. My Macbook has been updated to the most recent version of the operating system, but I thought it would still let me use the original disk. Any ideas?

You need to erase the drive before you try to instal the old OS.

1. Start the installation process by booting with the C key down.

2. Slect the language and continue to the next screen.

3. You will see a Menu bar on the top of the screen. Go to Utilities and select Disk Utility.

4. When DU is running, select the hard drive on the left and click Erase.

5. After the Erase is done, quit DU. You will be back in the installer.

6. Continue with the OS installation.
