I've tried safe booting and repairing permissions, and it still won't work there. Also with the terminal, the codes I've seen from other responses don't work or I can't enter my admin password.

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Cut/copy/paste and drag won't work.
