10.85 Supplement now includes Mach_Kernel in HD window.

Really.

Now all 3 of my computers show a Mach_Kernel file in the Macintosh HD window which is normally hidden.

Really.

Anyone else or just my 3 computers?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), iMac 27 (12,2-mid 2011)

As an admin user, Copy/paste this into terminal, then hit return.

sudo chflags hidden /mach_kernel

It will ask for your password. Enter it, but you won't see it echo back on the screen. Just type it and hit return.

Update: Yes, it was not hidden when I updated.

I'm wondering whether there's a difference between the Combo Updater and the incremental update, which did everyone use?

I'm wondering because I didn't have this issue when using the Combo Updater, although it's an issue I've seen before in other builds of various previous systems, or perhaops when cloning. Agree with everyone else that's it's not very meaningful and just needs the invisible bit reset.

Have you run Software Update to see if it shows the supplemental update as applicable for your Mac(s)? It's possible the combo doesn't include the fixes (although I notice that now both the incremental & combo updates at http://support.apple.com/downloads/#macos show an Oct 3 date, suggesting they may have been updated at the same time that the supplemental update was released).

Also, what is the build number you currently show for 10.8.5? After running the supplemental update on my Mac it changed to Build 12F45, slightly higher than the rumored Build 12F42 reported on Sept. 24 by 9-to-5 Mac, & (I think) somewhat higher than the original 10.8.5 build number I got when I updated via Software Update.

You would be referring to the original 10.8.5 update, correct? Does the supplement have a combo?

For the supplement, I used the App Store update. For 10.8.5 I used...um...something else.

12F45 and no Mach_Kernel visible. Try running the Combo over the update, I'm sure that's the answer.

It may be that both the combo & regular 10.8.5 updates now include the 'supplemental' fixes & that only the supplemental update fails to set the hidden flag for mach_kernel. As i mentioned above, all three now show the same Oct 3 post date on the downloads page, so something has changed since 10.8.5 was first released.

I assume that it doesn't matter how one gets to build 12F45, except that for those who updated prior to Oct 3 & then applied the Supplemental update there will be the mostly cosmetic flaw of a visible mach_kernel file, which is easily fixed with the sudo chflags hidden /mach_kernel terminal command.

Yes, that's probably the case. Of course you can re-hide mach_kernel easily enough but there may be other subtle fixes also. Running the Combo can do no harm and can only help.

Generally speaking, running the combo update vs. the regular incremental version only helps anything if one of the files the combo contains replaces a damaged or missing system file that the incremental version doesn't replace. Otherwise, there is no good reason to download (for instance) the 800 MB combo instead of the ~280 MB regular one (or the tiny little <20 MB supplemental update for those already running the earlier 10.8.5 update).

For some users, the time it takes to download the larger combo versions is a significant drawback. For a very few, its jumbo size could even result in a dangerously full hard drive with not enough temporary free space to apply the combo or for the OS to function stably.

All things considered, I think it is most important that users end up with all the fixes for 10.8.5 so they are running build 12F45 (or a later build if & when that becomes available). For some, just using the Terminal command to hide the mach_kernel file should be enough, unless they have other problems the combo update could fix.

10.85 Supplement now includes Mach_Kernel in HD window.
