stuck importing mailbox

When I opened mail, it started importing mailboxes and seems to be stuck without error message saying " imported 69277 of 250066 messages".

This happened when I opened mail after a change of hard disk on my MBP. I had just recovered using a Time Machine backup.

Does anybody know how to solve this problem or how to determine the location of the message that's creating the problem?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.

Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder

from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.

A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.

Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.

Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

I had the same problem, trying to import messages from an Apple Mail OSX server. The fix was click "Not Junk" on a message. OSX 10.9.2 on the client.

In my case the mail was on a server and I have a copy on a MacBook. When trying to Import the messages to the Macbook, it would repeatedly get stuck on Message 62491. I tried this repeatedly and always got stuck on the same message plus or minus one or two. I could tell the approximate location of the messages because they are in subfolders. I found some messages that would not load so I deleted them thinking I had solved the problem. I restarted the import and the MacBook again stopped at message 62489. I went back to that folder and found a message had the header "Mail thinks this Message is Junk". I had left the MacBook in the hung position, stopped at a message for a half hour. As soon as I clicked "Not Junk" on the Message (from a different Machine, it cleared the problem.
