Q: iMac keyboard/mouse won't connect

The iMac shut down durning a strom, but we had no actual power outage and is on a surge protector.  Started it up, and was starting up fine, showed connecting to mouse, keyboard.... even google is showing.  Started to type a website address and poof, lost connection to keyboard and mouse.  Both the bluetooth and wireless icons are now gone from the top right menu.  Forms suggested a wired mouse... the only one I had, a Dell didn't respond.  It works because I then tried it in a laptop and the mouse responded.  So, I don't know if the USB ports not responding too?   How do I get back ito my computer?

    Try resetting both the SMC and PRAM, if that doesn't help then it may be possible that even though the machine was shut down the blue tooth portion got zapped. Surge protectors come in all variety of quality so there is no saying what you have. Personally I only use a UPS to connect my equipment to.Try the resets at least 2-3 times and then try reconnecting your Bluetooth devices. Here are the articles you should study:

    Thank you.  Before posting, I did restart several times, with no luck.  So, I also then shut down, unplugged electric, then restarted with no luck again.  I did not unplug all peripherals as the SMC article you referred me to suggests, I can try that when I return... wondering if that will make any difference.  Also, the PRAM article appears to require the bluetooth/wireless to be working again, or how would the keyboard keys you are required to hold work?  Also, like I said, a bit concerned that pluggin in an old wired mouse didn't appear to respond either....?  Thoughs?  I honestly wish the Mac came with USB controls, but it didn't.

    Give the SMC reset attempt at least 3 tries before giving up, it doesn't always work the first time. If you still don't have any luck you may have a hardware issue which would require the machine to be taken in for repair. If a repair is necessary and it's proven to be related to the power issue, then you should look to see if your surge protector offers insurance to cover this type of damage. Otherwise it will be an out-of-pocket expense. BTW every UPS I've seen does offer this type of insurance and many surge protectors do too.

    Exhausting all options you've graciously supplied, I resorted to local certified apple tech who confirmed there was lightening damage causing my logic board along with the blue tooth and USB boards all to have been damaged.  Repair costing more then replacement with labor fees, I hope to have my replacement in hand and up and running by week's end.

    You realize of course, that in all likelihood, your household insurance should cover a complete replacement.   No disrespect but I only mentioned it as you didn't .
