Does iMessage compress photos?

Hi,

I've heard somewhere that iMessage does auto-compression on photos depending on if the sender / receiver is on cellular or wifi. Is this true at all? Does iMessage perform any compression of photos at anytime... or are they always sent as full resolution images ~2 MB each.

Thanks!

Images and videos sent as MMS messages (green) are compressed and resized as per carrier restrictions. iMessage messages (blue) are sent at original size, without modification, at least up to the max resolution the device’s camera will capture.

If desired, Messages settings now allows turning on low-quality image mode.

From the iPhone user manual...

"

Share photos, videos, and more

With iMessage or MMS, you can send and receive photos and videos, and send locations, contact info, and voice memos. The size limit of attachments is determined by your service provider—iPhone may compress photo and video attachments when necessary."

Emailing a photo will not compress it.
