Laptop got wet, now battery won't charge

My laptop got wet the other day. Took the battery out, dried the machine, and it comes up fine on power, but battery shows zero percent charge, and will not charge - the Magsafe light stays green and the dropdown menu says not charging. Any options for me? Anything to check, or am I getting a new battery to fx this?

It's a late 2008 - I already had depot service last year for $380, it ain't worth it again. If it's busted because of this, I'll go get a new MacBook Pro 13.

I did find my old battery and put it in (thank God I was too lazy to find a battery disposal site AND too concientous to throw it in the trash) and it's charging, but it's so old and worn out, it's a 5 minute UPS, not a battery that supports portability.
