Sent items show twice on MAIL (IMAP)

Hi everyone!

I need your help! 🙂

As the title suggests, I am experiencing an issue with the Mail app on my MacBook Pro. A few days ago, Hotmail/Outlook announced they started supporting IMAP and I thought that it would be the great way to sync my mail across all my devices (MacBook Pro + iPhone) and proceeded to set up my account as an IMAP account on all of them. Everything went flawlessly... Until today. Indeed, I noticed that when sending e-mails from Mail (OS X), the sent items would show up twice in the sent folder. It is all the more annoying since it syncs across my devices and I get these duplicates on my iPhone and on the web interface as well. Strange thing though, this does not happen when sent from my iPhone (or from the web for that matter), indicating clearly that the issue lies within the Mail app for OS X.

So my question is: does anyone know how to fix this and still let me sync my sent items across all my devices? What are the appropriate settings that I have to use to properly achieve this?

Thank you very much for your help!

Kind regards,

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I have tried this workaround a few times now.

User uploaded file

For me, this this DOES eliminate the duplicate sent message and this DOES put a copy on other devices, but there is a key flaw that still exists. When I try to delete a sent message from my phone, the message on the phone deletes but the message on the Mac remains. When I try to delete from the Mac, the message on the Mac deletes but the message on the phone remains.

The local copy on the Mac means that this will not sync.

Any new suggestions?

Hi

I could not find "store sent messages on server,"

Anyway, I'm having the same problem as Naidenj. I get the duplicates when REPLYING to emails sent to my hotmail accounts. When I send an email, it does not duplicate. When I reply to an email, I get the duplicates.

very frustrating, I bought a Mac because I was tired of window glitches!

Sorry to run OT but I strongly disagree. Long threads can contain many gold nuggets. Spread them out like butter and one sees quickly the task of finding information has now become divergent and this splits communities. You sprouting it is less visible therefore new thread is just plain wrong. That is a copy cat mentality that has plagued the internet community like the cancer that it is.

These threads can be subscribed to, unlike most forums but is now becoming more popular.

The problems we all share with Apple won't get attention with a multiple threads of the same problem because they all get buried in time. But tell someone there is a hundred page thread of issues THEN it is evident immediately that there is a problem. Breaking it up just aggravates the issue at hand with the users who are having the issue, like me.

Dear all,

I was frustrated with the whole thing as well.

It seems that several people had several issues, so what I needed was that I have duplicate emails in my Sent Folder of my Mac Mail when using outlook.com account.

I have fixed this by deleting the account from Mac Mail and add it (with the same name, login and password) as an Exchange account. I do not remember what it was before, but once I have done this all my sent emails were sent (or better said shown) as one email and not two.

Hope this helps 🙂

PS: And yes, adding Universal Mailer helped my font to be the way I like it, as outlook.com changed it to Times New Roman automatically, in case someone had that issue as well.

For MacOS Sierra 10.12.3, storing sent messages "on my Mac" at preferences worked for my @hotmail.com address.

I can see the sent messages on my outlook.com web client and phone as well (not using an iPhone at the moment though, so maybe that helps the problem that you won't see the sent messages on your phone, I don't know).

To see all of your sent messages, also those which are not sent from your Mac. In the Mac e-mail app, there is a "sent" folder in the hotmail folder, besides the sent messages in the "mailboxes" folder.

Hi guys,

I had the same problem than you with my mail app (official mail app for mac) for my Hotmail and outlook account (doesn't matter because the server used is the same for both of these).

So you just sent a mail and you see 2 times the same mail when you go to "sent" on your mail app, same when you go to the website outlook.com !!

Don't worry your mail was sent only once.

I think the problem is that when you send a mail, your mail app sends a request to put your message in your "sent folder", the problem is that Microsoft server for outlook save automatically each message sent in this folder, so finally you have 2 same mail in your sent folder.

The way is to change the folder for sent messages on your app: menu "mail" -> preferences -> accounts

For each account, go to "mailbox behavior" and in your list "sent mailbox" chose the folder "sent" in your mac (not the folder sent of your account".

I tried to send, everything is ok now.

I hope this message will help someone.

Cordially.

open from the Dock the "Mail" application in Mac," then "Mail" then "Accounts" then highlight your "msn" or "hotmail" email which has the duplicating problem because you could have severals here, then push on "Advanced" then you go and make the "Hostname" blank, leave this page full empty of information. then go & try to send from the email in question, I do not have a duplicate email in the msn/hotmail folder anymore, I hope this will fix this problem for you.

The reason is the IMAP server put automatically a copy of the sent email in the sent folder, so you do not have to tell him where to put or to do it or not, because like I've said, he will do it automatically.

I know a lot of people are saying this solved their duplicate sent mail problem but has anybody noticed once you carry out this procedure, you are no longer able to received emails via this account? This procedure also takes your account offline, at least as far as receiving email is concerned. Curiously enough, you can still send out email but you can't receive incoming emails. Or I'm I the only one experiencing this side effect?

Thank you Csound1,

Unfortunately, I think I did not make myself clear enough in my first post. When I said I set up IMAP 'across all my devices', I meant on my MacBook Pro only, since the iPhone configures itself automatically to use EAS as you rightfully pointed out in your post.

The info sheet you have shared proved to be very useful when I first set up my account! Indeed, I had followed its instructions carefully. Needless to say that I have tried deleting and setting up my account countless times.

Hello

I have the same problem as Valedictorian. And I don´t think it is a problem with Microsoft's service. I think it is its configuration. Microsoft, as does Google's Gmail, automatically make a copy of the sent message when using its smtp server to send mail.

But the Mail app also makes a copy of the message to the designated Sent folder, which explains why the items are duplicated.

The duplicating items problem is solved when unchecking a box in Mail's settings for accounts to keep sent messages on the server. But the problem is that when doing this, the Sent folder is not treated anymore as a Sent folder, but as a regular folder.

If I select the folder and use the option of using it as a Sent folder, the aforemetioned checkbox is automatically selected so sent emails are duplicating again.

Is there another setting I am missing so that the Sent folder is always treated as it is, but not duplicating emails?

Sent items show twice on MAIL (IMAP)
