Q: Sent items show twice on MAIL (IMAP)

Hi everyone!

I need your help!

As the title suggests, I am experiencing an issue with the Mail app on my MacBook Pro. A few days ago, Hotmail/Outlook announced they started supporting IMAP and I thought that it would be the great way to sync my mail across all my devices (MacBook Pro + iPhone) and proceeded to set up my account as an IMAP account on all of them. Everything went flawlessly... Until today. Indeed, I noticed that when sending e-mails from Mail (OS X), the sent items would show up twice in the sent folder. It is all the more annoying since it syncs across my devices and I get these duplicates on my iPhone and on the web interface as well. Strange thing though, this does not happen when sent from my iPhone (or from the web for that matter), indicating clearly that the issue lies within the Mail app for OS X.

So my question is: does anyone know how to fix this and still let me sync my sent items across all my devices? What are the appropriate settings that I have to use to properly achieve this?

Thank you very much for your help!

Kind regards,

MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Please don't tell me what you think I mean, you are wrong.

And that synchronization of Sent and Deleted messages will cease, little things like that.

I think what you mean is that the Outlook.com sent messages won't be shown as part of your unified Sent Mailbox, but rather as a separate mailbox under the name of your Outlook.com account in the folder list below.

The actual synchronization with the IMAP Sent folder still happens though, so you can always go into that separate folder if you ever want to look at things you sent. Also, Mail is still smart enough to show your responses in the conversation view, even though they're not saved in its unified Sent folder.

It's not exactly a "real" solution but it's the only one I've found that I can live with so far... especially since I've done time with both Sparrow and AirMail and came back unsatisfied with either.

There is no such thing as an Imap Sent folder, that would be the SMTP folder (Imap is incoming)

    But do as you wish.

OK. You're right, I have no idea what you meant. And I just stopped caring.

For anyone else who is here in the interest of productively sharing ideas rather than simply trolling, here is what I am talking about:

That Sent folder at the bottom will continue to contain all of your Outlook.com Sent items and they will be synchronized, excuse me, "copied back and forth to" your Outlook account automagically via IMAP.

Or you could map the Outlook sent folder to the Mail sent folder and have all the sent mail in one folder, where it should be without disabling the server save in Mail.

To Map a default folder that's on IMAP, select the IMAP folder.

Under Mailbox in the Menu bar, select use this mailbox as.....

Yes, but keep in mind that doing so will re-enable the "Store sent messages on the server" option! And if you have enabled the "Delete sent messages when" option then it would now result in deleting sent messages from the server! Please understand that I am suggesting a workaround that does not allow you to view your sent messages in the standard sent folder, however it will let you avoid duplicates if you set it up exactly as I mentioned (as shown below).

Not if you switch the setting from Delete when One Day Old, to Never.

Your suggested setup is incorrect. Folders should be correctly mapped, the fact that Outlook.com still doesn't work right for some people is Microsofts problem, one that they have had enough time to fix by now.

I am really impressed by your trolling skills!

It's besides the point whether my setup is "incorrect" according to you/Apple. The point is that in the interim until one of the companies steps up and caters to the other, I can still work productively without seeing duplicate Sent messages.

I am experiencing the exact same issue. What's the latest on this problem? Have you found a fix yet, besides unchecking the sent folder?

What's with Csound1 being such a nuisance?  Be productive or leave.  Nit picking peoples posts to beat your chest when you ignore the spirit and intention of the post proves little.  I'd never normally go to the trouble to post something like this but Csounds1 constant nagging is embarrassing.

Thanks for a possible workaround applicability which I may try if testing with another outgoing server gives grief.

Csound1, I agree that ideally Microsoft should fix it, but until then, what's your solution aside from ripping people down in the hope it makes you look correct?

If you have several email accounts, does the sent mail go to the one chosen account Sent folder, or do you need to do this for each account?

You need to map each account. Apple has an Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk for each account.

Well that seems to be a definitive solution to the whole problem, yet has taken til now to surface!   Thanks, soon as I get back from vacation that will be my first action.  Hope the OP recognizes the solution despite the bickering.

I have the same problem. It seems that Mail is creating its own copy in the Sent folder, and Outlook.com is doing so as well, creating these duplicates.

This is a known issue over at Microsoft. At http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/oemail-oapps/duplicate-sent -emails-from-mac-mail-via-imap/f4f73bc1-84e0-4be8-8bbe-20e31ba301f4, they say the following:

Please be informed that we are aware of this issue and we are still investigating what is causing this issue.Rest assured that we have a high degree of urgency in addressing this issue as quickly as possible. They will post for an update once it has already been resolved.

Not clear where they will post the update.

The only solution I have seen which makes sense is to use a different SMTP server, not at Microsoft (neither outlook.com, nor live.com).
