If you go to iTunes, look for "controls" in the top menu and click on it, then "eject (name of persons's iPhone) iPhone" near the bottom of the drop down menu. You can then pull the USB plug from both.
Just simply unplugging USB cable.
If you are, as I assume, in iTunes, then I would click on the Devices on the left and eject.

FYI: If you are in itunes 11 the device doesn't show up on the LEFT, it is at the TOP of the screen on the RIGHT. I just downloaded 11 and I couldn't find my iphone. I finally found it up at the top right and it has the eject arrow beside it.
I have a similar problem ejecting my iPod Classic after syncing in iTunes on my MacBook Air. It tells me that "cannot be ejected because it contains files in use by another application". When I pull the usb out I get a message "disc not ejected properly" I know that Windows users also are having problems too. Some users say that closing Google Chrome solves the problem. I have tried that but it does not solve the problem on my MacBook Air.
Can anyone please tell me what the files are that are in use?
