why do my email messages disappear from my inbox since I started using OSX Mountain Lion on my mac?

Why do my old email messages disappear from my inbox since I started using OSX Mountain Lion on my mac? These are not messages that I have deleted on other linked devices such as my iPad.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)
