Q: False "Server not found" error at startup

I have a new Mac Book Pro. When I start my computer, I get an error message about three times that says " Server Kevin's Computer not found" sewrver may not exist. Well as far as I know it does not exist. My wireless and everything works fine but I always ge this at startup and once in a while while I'm using the computer. I have looked everywhere for a reference to this server in my preferences and can't find any account of it. I did transfered all my data to it from an old Power MAc G5. Not sure if it is related to that. How can I get rid of this error. While it does not appear to be causing any issues, it does bug the **** out of me. Any help would be appreciated. MacBook Pro 2.7 GHz, OS 10.8.5.

Look in Login Items is Users & Groups. Make sure Migration Assistant is closed down.

The only item checked under startup items is my printer. Migration Assistant is not open. I also don't have file sharing on as someone thought that could be the problem. I also had someone say that it could be my Time Machine backup but not sure why or how that would relate as my Time Machine backup name does not match the name in the server error. I'm stumped on this one.

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.

    Step 1

If you get the warning as soon as you log in, it's probably caused by one of your login items or a system modification that loads at startup or login. Ask if you need help identifying it. A common offender is "AdobeResourceSynchronizer," which is a component of some Adobe products.

    Step 2

If there's an icon representing the server in the sidebar of a Finder window, hold down the command key and drag it out.

    Step 3

In the Finder, press the key combination command-K or select

    Go â–¹ Go to Server...

from the menu bar. In the upper right corner of the window that opens is a Recent Servers popup menu represented by a clock icon. From that menu, select

    Clear Recent Servers…

    and confirm. Test.

    Step 4

Open the Print & Scan pane in System Preferences and delete any network devices you no longer use.

    Step 5

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard (command-C):

    ~/Library/PDF Services

    In the Finder, select

    Go â–¹ Go to Folder...

from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder may open. If it does, move the contents to the Desktop, or to a new folder on the Desktop. Log out and log back in. Test. If there's no change, put the items you moved back where they were and continue.

    Step 6

    Open the folder

    ~/Library/Preferences

as in Step 5 and move the file named "loginwindow.plist" items in that folder to the Trash, if it exists (it may not.)

Log out and back in again, and test.

    Step 7

Other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, and bookmarks in the Preview application.

    Try rebuilding the iPhoto library.

    Step 8

Triple-click the line below to select it:

    /System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app

Rght-click or control-click the highlighted text and select

    Services â–¹ Open

from the contextual menu.* The application Directory Utility will open.

In the Directory Utility window, select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Mounts from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, and /Local/Default from the node menu, if not already selected. On the right is a list of names and values. By default, the list is empty. If it's not empty, post a screenshot of the window and stop here.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

    Step 9

Open the following file as you did in the last step:

    /etc/auto_master

It will open in a TextEdit window. The contents should be exactly this:

    #
    # Automounter master map
    #
    +auto_master          # Use directory service
    /net               -hosts          -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
    /home               auto_home     -nobrowse,hidefromfinder
    /Network/Servers     -fstab
    /-               -static

If there are any other lines in the window, post them. Otherwise, close the window.

A common offender is "AdobeResourceSynchronizer," which is a component of some Adobe products. I unchecked all login items but it still comes up.

    Step 2

If there's an icon representing the server in the sidebar of a Finder window, hold down thecommand key and drag it out. - There was no icon for the server!

    Step 3

In the Finder, press the key combination command-K or select

    Go â–¹ Go to Server...

from the menu bar. In the upper right corner of the window that opens is a Recent Servers popup menu represented by a clock icon. From that menu, select

    Clear Recent Servers…

and confirm. Test. - I Cleared all servers, it was listed in this list twice but is now gone. The message still comes up after restart.

    Step 4

Open the Print & Scan pane in System Preferences and delete any network devices you no longer use. - Only my current printer is there. I even tryied re installing the printer software. - I have a feeling it is related to my printer because it was shared with another computrer before. Print sharing has been turned off though and the message continues.

    Step 5

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard (command-C):

    ~/Library/Preferences

as in Step 5 and move the file named "loginwindow.plist" items in that folder to the Trash, if it exists (it may not.)

Log out and back in again, and test. - Trashed it, didn't fix the problem.

    Step 7

Other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, and bookmarks in the Preview application.

Try rebuilding the iPhoto library. - Rebuilt IPhoto Library, didn't fix it. not sure how to check iTunes. No bookmarks in Preview. Didn't Fix it.

    Step 8

Triple-click the line below to select it:

    /System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app

Rght-click or control-click the highlighted text and select

If there are any other lines in the window, post them. Otherwise, close the window. - All Items Matched.

Thanks for all your help but it looks like after all that, I may just have to live with this problem, huh? Oh, well. At least it's not happening every few minutes. lol.

Did you really take every one of those steps with no effect?

Yes I really did. I put my responses in Bold. The only thing that I didn't do was that you mentioned a possible issue with iTunes and I did not know what to look for so I didn't address that. Also, relative to the login in items, I didn't delete them from the list, I just unchecked the boxes, not sure if that matters.

I just unchecked the boxes, not sure if that matters.

Unchecking the boxes would have no effect on the problem, if it's caused by a login item (which it probably is.)

Actually unchecking the Hide checkbox make them active.

Highlight the time machine backup entry and click the Minus ( - ) sign. Then restart the system.

That did it. Thanks. the question now is, will my Time Machine Backup run? And why would it be listed under an old computer name? Just trying to better understand how this stuff works.

If time machine is turned on in System Preferences anytime you connect your TM backup drive it will start a backup.

If you are using a Time Capsule same thing. No need to put TM in the login items and I'm not sure how it got there in the first place, unless you added it.

Did you by chance buy your Mac used?

Thanks again. Yeah, I have no idea how it got there either. I don't know enough about the systems to mess with that stuff. I did transfer from an old PowerMac g5 though so maybe back in the day there was a time machine startup item. Anyway, thanks again for all your help. That thing was driving me nuts.

Oh, and no, I bought it new but the server error was related to the name if my old computer so it must have pulled that startup item from my G5.
