Q: Safari iOS 7 keeps flashing previously closed tabs upon reopen? Security Problem

Hello, I am using an iPad 2 on iOS 7 with safari in private mode.  Safari on iOS 7 has a bug (iOS 6 didn't behave this way) where you can close tabs and leave the safari app and when you come back to open safari, it will flash an old tab on the screen before loading a fresh blank page.  The weirdest thing is the tab isn't even the most recent tab, just something random during the day.  I could just picture this causing problems for people e.g. Husband shopping for surprise trip online and expedia flashes on screen for his wife even though he thought he'd safely closed the tab or any other situation where you don't people getting a peek at your business.  What is the point of private mode if safari chooses to randomly display previously closed tabs to anyone?

Please post if you've noticed the same behavior.

Real pain indeed and thanks for the solution. I have to say that I have noticed the same issue with other apps, because of the way ios 7 handles multitasking. I experience the same issue with netflix, but never with Mail or the weather app, weird? Probably not. IOS 7 freezes the app, and that is when the snapshot is generated. Apple has to fix this thing.

I can't believe no one has responded to this solution, I tried your method and as I turned my Ipad4 , I saw old screens on the page....I hope this will be the solution. I have also tried some of the other methods, and maybe they will contribute to the solution. Thanks

    Sorry..."hall" did.....

Well hopefully that trick works for clearing out old images whether people are responding or not, it has still been working for me with no issues. The whole thing is just crazy that apple would allow their software to function this way. It is not limited to safari either; email apps, the iTunes Store, and many of my games have old cached images from each orientation as well. If there is anything sensitive in any of my other apps I go through the same routine of checking them in each orientation.

I also find that the hand-off from one ipad orientation to another can be subtle. I always thought I generally use my ipad in only one of the four orientations, but something as simple as setting it down on a flat table can cause it to read a change from one orientation to another. Apple need to either eliminate this storing of images, have the latest image override all older ones in all orientations, or at least allow people a way to disable or more easily delete the stored snapshots. As has been posted before, clearing all history, cookies, and data from safari does not work to get rid of these images, they are stored separately. I guess security isn't a priority for apple as long as their stuff looks sleek.

Argh I thought this had stopped, after trying the various solutions, but again to no avail. It has literally just happened twice to me again! IPad mini which is fully updated and I've literally tried everything. Really not impressed!

What procedures did you try to go about clearing out the old images when it happened to you twice again?

I searched this thread for a solution, but it appears there's none

This same issue appears on my iPhone 5 & iPad 2

As everyone here states, previous & deleted screens reappears

For instance, if I open my mail app, I'll get a screen showing an old email that I viewed, but when you enter the app, it refreshes to the current screen

    Same happens in Safari

    Iamsmc,

Did you try the following solution that appears at the bottom of the 5th page of this thread? I do believe that this very behavior is corrected by doing the procedure that follows:

Close all apps besides safari, then open Safari and close all tabs so the browser just shows a blank page. Exit out by clicking the home button once. Then double click home to show your open apps, which should just be safari; the preview image should show a blank safari page, and if you click on the window with the safari app you should enter the browser and see no old web page flash, just the blank page. Exit by clicking home once, rotate the ipad 90 degrees, then repeat the exact same process- click home twice to bring up a preview window and then enter safari to see if it is the blank page or if safari is using an old cached image. If any orientation has an old page pop up, make sure to enter safari in that orientation and clear out the page. Once you have done this in all 4 orientations you should be fine. What a pain, right? And you have to do this whenever you want to clear out old safari images. It has worked for several weeks for me with the problem recurring, curious to know if this trick works for others as well. But seriously apple needs to just fix it on their end to avoid this hassle.

    Hi guys.

I have been following this thread carefully over the last few months hoping someone would find a solution to this incredibly inconvenient security issue. After no proven fix I was eagerly awaiting the new release of the new iOS8 to put things right. After installing iOS8 on my iPad Air on Tuesday I can confirm the issue STILL exists!

I have no idea why Apple haven't even acknowledged this problem or made it a priority to fix!

With this issue still happening I am extremely hesitant to even use my new iPad Air for all sorts of security reasons. Private browsing quite literally means the opposite until this issue is fixed!

UPDATE - It now seems other applications in iOS8 including Camera Roll & the official Twitter app are also behaving the same way as Safari. For example, when double clicking the home button to show all running applications, previous visited pages & old photographs thumbnails are displayed until I choose the specific app I want to use.

I have even seen this in new iPhone 6. Why is Apple not responding to this?

because apple is not giving a **** to this thread

they are more concerned with iCloud privacy/security issues lately

PS: confirmed in my iphone 5S with iOS 8 yesterday.

The problem is not the way it shows the app snapshots when you open/switch them... it's simple it uses randomly (sometimes) very old images, or show things that you don't want for it to show, even erasing all history and such...

think they could fix very easily by forcing a "snapshot delete" each time you forcibly close the app through the task switcher

Indeed. I see how this thread gets no attention despite the number of reports. One thing about how random the issue is, I can't replicate it. I tried to figure whether it's time or an specific app, but so far I can't predict when it will happen, just that it will. I can confirm that safari and netflix consistently present the issue. Come on Apple wake up!

We must all realize that Apple isn't interested unless this issue gains traction in the media. Any suggestions on getting CNET, PCMAG, CNN or some other large media outlet to report on this issue? They are the only people Apple will listen to.

The reason that is not answering this thread is that this is a user-to-user technical support forum, which  you would know if you'd  read the Terms of Use when you signed up. Apple's participation here is minimal. If you want to leave feedback to Apple, use this link: http://www.apple.com/feedback

I already left feedback for Apple, that is why I am here. Thank you though.
