Q: Safari iOS 7 keeps flashing previously closed tabs upon reopen? Security Problem

Hello, I am using an iPad 2 on iOS 7 with safari in private mode.  Safari on iOS 7 has a bug (iOS 6 didn't behave this way) where you can close tabs and leave the safari app and when you come back to open safari, it will flash an old tab on the screen before loading a fresh blank page.  The weirdest thing is the tab isn't even the most recent tab, just something random during the day.  I could just picture this causing problems for people e.g. Husband shopping for surprise trip online and expedia flashes on screen for his wife even though he thought he'd safely closed the tab or any other situation where you don't people getting a peek at your business.  What is the point of private mode if safari chooses to randomly display previously closed tabs to anyone?

Please post if you've noticed the same behavior.

I already left feedback for Apple, that is why I am here. Thank you though.

I think, however, the person to whom I replied probably had not.

Actually I've left several messages with Apple feedback support. I've also called them on the phone. The people on the phone seem to be totally unaware of the problem, which I find absurd. No results from feedback. I've even left the links to this exact thread so they can read it. It's obvious that they are not concerned.

Which should not come as a surprise as it is explicitly stated they won't respond.

IPad 3 iOS 8.0.2, still had the same issue. I deactivated the Spotlight search in Safari settings as well as the Quick web search. Settings app crashed twice when switching these buttons but it seems to have solved the problem. I also changed many other settings in confidentiality and notifications, don't know if some helped too..

I also deactivated the "do not follow" button in Safari settings: as explained by Apple, this setting will only work if the visited site has a line (of html?) code telling it to do so. Who'd care about this? specially dubious websites which might instead exploit it?

Turned "privacy" surfing off by the way, won't be of any use regarding the above anyway.. "Notes" still has a minor bug now (duplicates title line of a modified note onto the second note / is restored ok when app restarted), but the flashing previously opened tabs issue in Safari or Notes disappeared.

Fact is: privacy by turning unnecessary iOS-native privacy settings and "search helpers" off

Same is happening with a new iPhone 6 with IOS 8.0.2.

Have tried deactivating spotlight search and quick web search as mentioned above so we'll see if that makes a difference.

the iOS takes a snapshot of the browser page and will sometimes not update it. What you are seeing is a old snapshot.

This is indeed a very annoying problem. I found that the suggestion regarding turning the iPad to different orientations, and then opening the app using the multitasking menu, does indeed work and refresh the snapshot - however, it is clearly a temporary fix as this has to be done each time you want to clear the snapshot being stored for that orientation.

The real issue lies with the iPhones where the home screen orientation is looked to portrait. I seem to have found the scenario in which a snapshot will get permanently stuck. If you have safari in landscape, close it, and then double press the home button, the multitasking snapshot is different compared to if you close safari when it is in portrait mode. To my knowledge there is no way to update this snapshot - I've tried all suggestion in this thread. Note: I'm not talking about the snapshots that appear when you open the multitasking bar whilst safari is actually open in landscape mode (these snapshots actually appear landscape and can be refreshed).  Im not sure when this snapshot is first created - maybe the first time you ever close safari? But once its there its there for good. I think the only way to update the snapshot would be if you could open the multitasking menu whilst having the home screen in landscape mode like on an iPad (but since this is disabled on iphones it is causing the bug). In my case, I have my bank details stuck there: every time I have safari in landscape, close it, and then open it using the multitasking menu, I get an old snapshot of my bank statement pop up. Whats more, I think these snapshots are included in iCloud backup so now my only really choice to get rid of it will be to set up my phone as new. This really is really quite annoying.

    Hello all,

I have been having the same problem with old deleted web pages flashing on the screen. I've read that Safari's cache system gets confused and loads old pages instead of the most recent pages. This should be fixed when you clear the cache but obviously we have all tried this. The cache is supposed to run for a few days and then be removed to make room for new data so it might be possible to adjust your time and date setting to a week in the future and then clear the cache. When you revert back to the correct time it may clear the cache by the built in expiration date.

Go to: Settings>General>Date & Time>>Turn off Set Automatically>> Then set the date to a week in the future>>Next, while in settings>Safari>clear History and Website Data>>Now go back to General>Date & Time>Turn on Set Automatically

I just tried this and I haven't noticed anymore flashes.

    Good Luck!

Im having this problem too on my iphone 6 running 8.1.  Luckily its just an imdb page and not something private which it could quite easily be.  Googling this problem shows people running ios 5 had this problem!

I have the exact same issue as everybody else. I've tried everything that was said. Set clock ahead, reset settings, close all tabs in different orientations. Everything.

Does anybody have any update on this issue?

Same here, brand new iPhone 6 plus running iOS8.1. Weird thing is I never encountered this on my iPhone 4s running iOS7.

I find it staggering how long it takes apple to address certain issues. It has been a really long time since the first post.

So I got it fixed. I went under settings->iCloud and then unchecked safari. I also disabled it under the documents and data tab. I created a backup and theN restored. It's fixed!

Unfortunately, none of these solutions fix the problem on iOs 8 on an iPhone 6. Any other ideas?

I'm currently using an iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.1 and an iPad Air running iOS 8.1 as well. Both of my devices seem to have this problem. For example, if I was on a Yahoo page and I lock my phone, then turn my phone again through passcode and click on safari again, it would briefly show a website that I have been on like 2 hours ago when the last webpage I visited was Yahoo. Privacy issues really bother me as many different people use my iPad and my phone as well (Friends, family, etc). I hope Apple fixes this bug as this is a very annoying issue that bothers me more than battery life drain bug or some other issue I've never heard of that they are focused on. This problem happens if you double-click home button during multitasking sometimes as well.
