After force quiting an application, I lost my usual desktop. The desktop background was there, and my dock was still there, but all of the files on my desktop are not there anymore. Can anyone help?

CedarFort, welcome, bootup from the install Panther CD (C key held down) and once the disk mounts (X window) open Disk Utility from the Main Menu under Installer. Choose your drive in the left column then select First Aid, now run the Repair, if it does not repair run it again. Now select the startup volume (with the OS) and run the Repair Permissions, quit Disk Utility.
Now go back up to the Main Menu under Install/Change Startup Disk and select your startup volume then Restart.

If this does not do it post back.

CedarFort.....

Disk Utility lost connection with Disk Management Tool and cannot continue."

The problem generally affects users running Mac OS X 10.3.9.

• Drag ITunes 6.02 from the Application folder onto the Desktop, then run Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
• Then return iTunes back to the Application Folder. You'll have to do this whenever you want to Repair Permissions until Apple provides a fix...

But you have two options....

Option #1.....Re-install iTunes 6.0.1
Delete the following files in order for the installation to proceed properly:
• The iTunes 6.0.2 application (located in /Applications)
• com.apple.iTunes.plist (from ~/Library/Preferences)
• iTunes.pkg (from /Library/Receipts)
You should then be able to properly use the iTunes 6.0.1 (or 6.0) installer.

Option #2.... This is the best option
Allows Disk Utility to function normally and keep iTunes 6.0.2

• Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg

Okay, thanks for both of your help, but nothing has changed. I was finally able to repair my disk and repair permissions on the startup disk, but it didn't help. I still have nothing on my desktop and anytime I try to do anything in the finder window I get the scrolley wheel of death and the computer freezes.

Any more ideas on what I can do?

Hi again, first lets try a PRAM reset, if that does not solve the issue then please post back after checking a few things listed below.

Make sure you are logged under your name, from the Dock go to System Preferences and select Accounts. Select your users icon in the left hand column, now select Security an make sure “Allow user to administer this computer” is checked. Quit System Preferences.

Now go to the Finder and under Finder, scroll down to Preferences and make sure the first three boxes are checked under Show these idem on the Desktop.

Now from the main menu under Go scroll down to your Users (Home) folder, then Control click on you Desktop icon and scroll down to Get Info. This should open a Desktop Info window. In the lower part of that Desktop Info window make sure under Details you are listed as the Owner, if not unlock the box and scroll to you name. Relock the box and close the Desktop Info window.

Thanks for the advice. I reset the PRAM, but it didn't help. I checked the first and third things on your list and they were correct. I am the administrator and the desktop is owned by me. However, I can't check the second item (I am 99.9% positive they are all checked though). When I click on Finder and then Preferences I get locked up.

Any other ideas?

Sorry about the interruption but we lost power here over night.
Anyway here are a few thing you might try.

1. Go to your user/library/preferences folder and trash com.apple.finder.plist. Restart and see if that solves the issue, if not proceed to step 2.

2. Go to your user/library/preferences folder and trash com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist. Restart and see if this solves the issue.

3. At this point I consider removing the new mouse software hopefully you still have your original mouse. After this the only other option I can think of is an Archive and Install.

Im looking for help as well. I have the same situation, I had to force quit an app and when I restarted my system only my desktop and mouse pointer shows. no dock or anything thing else.

I have another user on my system and they are able to login and everything works fine. But I have them setup with limited administrative access so i'm unable to resolve the issue.

please advise
