replacing hard drive

I'm thinking about getting an older used white Macbook, and just upgrading the internals (HD/RAM). Any suggestions on the brands/deal? Or perhaps things to stay away from? Like in that old of a model, can I get a solid state HD? How would I find ones that fit it?

Sorry, first computer surgery.

Thanks

How old? The RAM specs among the different models are not same. Macbook2,1 for example uses DDR2-667 PC2-5300 200 pin SODIMM.

The good news is you can find RAM for any Macbook no matter how old. There are many vendors out there. I use this one: http://www.macramdirect.com/macbook.html#mb3

As for SSD you have to make sure the physical fit is correct. This is a good overview.

You have chosen wisely for your "first computer surgery". Both these are relatively easy to do. For the hard drive replacement you will need a Torx #8 screw driver.

There are numerous guides, including videos, on line to help you.

Good luck.

It would help to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
