iPhone 4S Won't Charge After iOS7 Update

After updating my 6 month old 4S to iOS 7 it worked fine for about 3 days then it suddenly stopped charging and subsequently died, since then it has been sat on my desk dead as it will not charge what so ever. I have tried 5 different cables and 3 different charging methods, wall, PC and car and the phone detects that the charger is plugged in but doesn't charge. This suggests to me that whatever sends power from the charging socket to the battery is broken. Thoughts?

Mr Finch - who hasn't declared whether or not he works for Apple - doesn't believe that Apple should, in his words, '.... permit the use of charging devices that might damage the phone'.

Permit????

Do we really need Apple's permission to use another company's charger?

Apple's chargers may well be better than Dealextremes but DX's are only a 10th of the price and we have about 20 around the house and none of us have damaged our iphones yet. It's a bit reminiscent of phone companies in the old days refusing to allow you to connect other company's phone sets to their switch. The motives were obvious.

Yes it would be nice to get an official reply from Apple but that doesn't look very likely. We've got our answer now and hopefully some lawyer will strart a class action against the company.

I do not work for Apple. Generally Apple does not post in the forum, and does not read the forum. The exceptions are "Community Specialists" who respond to posts that have had no responses in 24 hours. All they are permitted to do is to refer the user to Knowledge Base articles. And they do not communicate with other departments in Apple. There are also moderators, who also do not read the forums and whose sole job is to assure compliance with the Terms of Use. They are not technical experts in anything other than maintaining the forum software, and also do not communicate with other departments. The moderators have filters that alert them to potential violations based on keyword recognition. They also depend on Level 3 and higher participants to report TOU violations. In general criticizing Apple is not a TOU violation, however, doing so using inapporpriate language, threatening Apple or its employees or personally attacking another member is.

To get back to the technical side, Apple holds a patent on the Lightning connector. They enforce this patent. That's a requirement of owning a patent; if you don't enforce it you lose it. So anyone selling a Lightning cable who has not obtained a license from Apple is violating Apple's patent, and Apple has the right to refuse to permit the use of the violating device with the iPhone or iPad. They did not enforce it initially, but the chose to later in iOS 7. That is their right, whether you like it or not. FWIW, a class action suit that claimed that Apple should not enforce its patent rights would be dismissed immediately.

As far as 5 volt USB adapters is concerned, Apple does not require that they be licensed. However, they must meet USB standards of voltage, current, line isolation, spike suppression and other factors such as AC bleedthrough, and many do not. The ones that do not can damage an iDevice. A USB 5 volt adapter certifies that it meets standards by the way it manages the data line voltage. Apple accepts this self-certification and will allow the device to be used with their products. Any device that does not do this should not be used with any device, not just Apple's, even if it appears to work.

I have the same problem with my phone not charging at all, (as many other people have said, pulling my hair out for hours) however i have got a work-around for now.

the only way i can get my phone to charge (and yes it is a genuine charger) is to plug it into my computer and then DO NOT click anything on itunes.

it comes up with the "do you want to allow this computer to access information on..." DO NOT click continue or cancel as the phone will stop charging.

THANK GOD!

Really poor apple. thankfully my phone works until i can go purchase a samsung replacement. lost my buisness.

It's well known that ios7 puts more load on an iPhone battery than ios6. What I suspect is that in cases where the battery may still be OK, but marginally so, it's pushed over the edge by the additional load and possibly additional current accepted when charging, with the added heating that results from both. There are ways to reduce the additional load by turning off some of the eye-candy features of ios7. I'm sure you can find them if you google for them. My wife and I have intentionally refused to update to ios7 (if it works, don't fix it!) so we've avoided these problems.

Mar 18, 2014 10:00 AM in response to Lawrence Finch

Lawrence, Apple should permit the use of charging devices which have worked in the past for people. If a charger was so out of spec that it was in danger of damaging one's phone, why was it functional for years under ios6? Why, under ios7, is the phone, which, if it's a 4s, has survived already for several years, suddenly pickier about chargers. In other words, if it works, don't fix it!

In the real world people depend on their iPhones to stay connected in many ways and in many places. We have to buy chargers at supermarkets, at truck stops, wherever we can get them when we need them. Sometimes we have to use unclean DC power to charge our phones. More often than not we don't have the luxury of being able to buy genuine Apple phone chargers.

Apple screwed up badly on this, and I would guess that at some level they know it. All properly designed electronic equipment contains hardened circuits where the devices interface with the Real World, with generous allowances for making use of power with over and under voltages, spikes, dirty power, RFI, etc. Yes, you can legally (and morally) justify Apple's decision to start enforcing their patent on the lightning connecter, to boost OS-imposed restrictions on out-of-spec chargers and such, but these are customer-unfriendly, and in the end will only benefit Android phone sales. In the meantime, it looks as if there's a bit of a move at Apple to throw us iPhone 4 and 4s users under the bus. Not good!

I'm sticking with ios6 on my 4s as long as I can, and may well switch to an Android phone when my 4s becomes unusable for some reason.

I'm having the same problem. Using Iphone 4, and after the update IOS 7.0.x and now i'm using IOS 7.1 my battery drop dead can't charging and stuck @ Low battery icon.

When My Iphone still ON, charging till 100% (when i a sleep, using Plug Wall Adapter). but the morning iPhone is OFF and there's info Low Battery and can't Turn IT on. After a while try to turn it on again, and finally it can after a short time connecting USB to PC and try to turn ON again, The weird part Battery already 100%, so the info is wrong. For weeks I don't charge till 100% afraid the same problem occured (already 3 times happened when charging till 100%). But this day i forgot, and sleep when my iPhone is charging (iPhone is ON when charging). Now my iPhone drop dead again, still can't turn back on again. And this happen on IOS 7, when charging its no problem if my iPhone ON and not let 100% chargin', and my battery usage is fine so its not a deffective battery.

When the low battery icon is shown, it detect when i'm pluggin the power, but it can't charge even tried 2 hours (before already 100% chargin). Still trying to get my phone turn ON, but i'm sure when it turn ON it will shown 100% Battery Life.. This is s*cks, hope apple will get this fixed soon..

Note:

* i haven't tried to restore to default new iPhone

* My iPhone still responsive when i tried to DFU mode (My PC still detect a DFU Mode)

* Tries after DFU mode and restart iPhone still won't make my iPhone Turn ON (press Power and Home Button for more than 10 second, still don't see apple logo)

===================

Finally found a Apple Logo (My iPhone back On again), of course 100% Battery stated in my iPhone.

In my case to turn back on again is:

1. Press Power Button and Home Button (hold it). Make sure you usb cable already plug to your iPhone and don't plug cable to any power or PC usb yet.

2. Plug the Cable to PC (still holding the Power and Home Button), if you see Apple Logo you can release Power and Home Button.

3. You iPhone is turn ON again..

Apple isn't going to fix anything, unless you take your phone to Apple and they fix YOUR PHONE. There is no systemic problem responsible for your symptoms; your phone is messed up. You haven't tried even basic troubleshooting steps like Restoring the phone as new. Do that. If the problem resolves there's something wrong with your update or apps. If the problem remains you have a hardware problem. And if you don't try this your phone will probably never work right again.

Is this discussion still active? There seems to be a lot of mixed opinions on a common problem here, can anyone please suggest for certain what the problem may be? I have a two year old iPhone 4s running ios7.1. My problem is that my phone recharges fine with the stock apple wall charger using a third party 3m sync cable, charges fine from usb2.0 ports on my laptop, ps3 and my Samsung TV, it always recharged fine with my belkin USB micro 12v 1amp car charger, and now it doesn't! The charger has a red led indicating my cars 12v socket is powered, phone gets the lightening bolt and the battery goes green, but discharges at a rate of 1% per 3-4mins. I use the same sync cable as I use with my wall charger, phone has had a charger port replacement. I bought a Griffin power jolt 1amp apple charger with a hard wired 30pin dock connector (the non USB version) when I plug this into my car (either of my 12v sockets) it illuminates the red ring but when I connect this to my phone, my phone does nothing, no tone, no vibration, no lightening bolt etc. I saw someone stating on here that it can't be a software error but hardware, to be honest I disagree, surely this must be a software error, or is it that 12v 1amp isn't enough to charge ios7.1 now?? Have I just wasted my money buying a belkin 2.1amp USB car charger?? Can anybody actually shed some light with a definitive answer please? I spend a lot of time in my car and I really do need to be able to keep my phone juiced while I'm driving!

Your problem is different. It is charging, but there is something on the phone that is draining power faster than the charger can supply it. Restore the phone using iTunes and set up as New; do not restore your backup or create any email accounts. See if that allows it to charge. If it does, try restoring your backup. If the problem comes back there is corrupt data in the backup of one or more apps (usually just one).

I've had this problem with the car charger for a while now, and to be honest I did a restore to new etc recently in a bid to cure sound output issues and my home button not working, which in turn resulted in a replacement charger port (the flex connector for the home button had broken and the phone thought it was docked, hence no sound from the built in speaker) and I've still got the same apps as I had before, not added anything else, and I only use hotmail, I never open 'dodgy' emails and I only go to reputable websites both through safari and google. I do think the problem is within iOS 7.1
