Is it possible? If I want to leave my MacBook Pro closed on the desk out of reach and just use the thunderbolt display with a USB apple keyboard how can I turn it on and off?

Yes it works pefectly fine, I m doing what your asking while typing this.
I have a 13" 2011 MBP connected via Thunderbolt to 2 x 27" Thunderbolt Displays, they only issue with the 13" is it can only drive 2 displays at once and it will black out your notebook display.
I have used both USB and Bluetooth keyboards without issue.

You can't turn it off and off with the external keyboard. Use sleep instead. Any key-press should wake it.
OK but how do you do it. Which button is making it turn on and off? Or are you just using sleep as Malcolm said?
