No sound with hdmi

So there is no sound playing through my tv speakers when I plug my macbook into it. It was working perfectly fine and then all of a sudden it just stopped. It used to do this all the time, where the sound would just cut off. I'd usually unplug and plug it to make it work but this time there is no sound whatsoever. I already checked to see if the sound output was selected as the hdmi cable and I've restarted but nothing. I plugged in my friend's macbook and there was sound that came through. Is there something wrong with my macbook? I've had it for about only a year.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

First make sure, that you have selected the correct output (alt + click on sound icon in menu bar, than select the corect output device).

Try to restart program you are using (i know, that if you are watching a movie in VLC player and than plug in HDMI cable, you loose the sound, after you reopen the program, sound works just fine)

Hope it helps.
