I have exactly the same... Searching on the net other users said it is likely to be a hardware problem and if you still have a warranty, apple will repair it or give you a new phone. As for me, the phone is over 2 years old so I don't have a warranty. Now I probably have to trow it away or let it repare for a lot of money (for which I can buy a new phone as well).

Always so proud to have an iphone, now very very dissapointed that it can be broken so suddenly without fault of my own....

Hi Guys,

Simple solutions to not-simple problems:

I have tried 2 times, restoring my iPhone 5 with iTunes. During installation (~60%), it failed by giving the error: "An unknown error occured (1)."

I sent my phone to the service (not Apple Service) and they failed to fix it too. Last chance, I tried it with another connection cable (actually it was not original cable either but it worked. My iPhone is restored successfully.

I don't know what this problem is about but be patient and don't give up trying 🙂

BTW, Apple is giving a new iPhone to the phones having an error of (1) if iPhones is younger than 12-months.

Dear Pappi,

Yes, I restored my iPhone 5... The suggestions that I could make:

1. Try with your original connection cable

2. Change USB port

3. Change computer

4. Change USB port in changed computer (prefer desktop if possible)

5. Change connection cable

If these are not enough, if your warranty valid, call Apple, then sent your iPhone 5 to an Apple Store. They will change your phone with a new one. (It doesn't matter where you are located.)

After many attempts (and many, many unknown errors +1, 3, 11, 1394, etc etc), it seams that my iphone is not a brick anymore.

Summary of soap opera:

1) disconnect iphone from usb; set DFU mode (hold power and home for ~10s simultaneously; then only home for more ~5s);

2) make sure "hosts" file is set as the original one (for PC -> c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc) - in my case all lines commented/starting with "#"

3) Download corresponding ipsw firmware (google it or http://www.ipswdownloader.com/download-iphone-ipsw-files.php)

3) Open itunes and reconnect usb

4) Hold "shift", click restore; select the downloaded ipsw file

I did it all without the SIM card inserted (only at the very end I inserted it again - although google told me later that some people were more lucky keeping the SIM card inserted all the time ...)

In my case, I had an additional issue: after itunes successfully finished the flashing process (no unknown errors); I tryed to restore the backup I had previously saved. But this caused the iphone to the eternally "searching..." problem.

So I had to backup some specific things in an alternate way; and reset the iphone again - but this time I set it up as a "new" equipment, and so long the "searching..." issue has not appeared yet.

Next steps: save SHSH data (google it); keep alternative means of backups for important content.

Hope this helps. And honestly, my next cell phone will most likely be an Android.

I have solve this by a crazy way!! I had the same issues like you guys. So, I make a restore from another pc with out antivirus and clean install of itunes for first time. BUT my iphone was out of battery while I had it for 15 days with out using it. Like this I fix error1. I think restore it with out any battery energy left was the solution. Please

if anyone manage to restore iphone the same way confirm this post.

please help me !!!! any solution???

Jan 31, 2014 12:49 PM in response to temurjabiev

I have the same issue, trying to retore my iphone 4s to 7.0.4, but after about 60% comes with error code (1) not -1.

I have been to few forums, and tried the usual:

different PC, different usb, disable firewall and antivirus, uninstall and reinstall itunes, etc.

But not working.

few people tell me that the error code 1 is hardware issue. something to do with water damage trigger by the chip inside the iphone, if this is activated then it does not restore?

not sure what to do now??

I would recommend you to download ifaith and download the shsh blobs just to see what is the latest ios it had, some iphone had 7.1b4 installed therefore i suggest you to try and restore to that.

ios 7 restore error 1
