I have the same issue, trying to retore my iphone 4s to 7.0.4, but after about 60% comes with error code (1) not -1.

I have been to few forums, and tried the usual:

different PC, different usb, disable firewall and antivirus, uninstall and reinstall itunes, etc.

    But not working.

few people tell me that the error code 1 is hardware issue.  something to do with water damage trigger by the chip inside the iphone, if this is activated then it does not restore?

not sure what to do now??

I would recommend you to download ifaith and download the shsh blobs just to see what is the latest ios it had, some iphone had 7.1b4 installed therefore i suggest you to try and restore to that.

Error 1. Just got back from apple store. I drove and 1hr 30min. For them to try and install it on their computer (I already tried on multiple computers). They want me to buy a new phone for $200. Why would I buy the same phone again after this one took a **** on me after 15 months. Apple can go **** themselves.

I tried this and it worked:

    • Unable to downgrade. Try changing the USB port (the back one of chassis is better) and restart computer. Pray.

    Hello everyone,

After dealing with this issue for a few days I was able to fix my issue.

The errors that I was getting were 1 and -1 on an iPhone4 upgrading to IOS 7

I read and tried every fix under the sun it seemed.

The fix for me was the DNS cache (even though I tried it on a different computer)

    Here is the whole story...

I had a working iPhone4 on iOS6 when I started trying to upgrade to the latest version.

I plugged it in to iTunes and hit restore, after an extremely long DL (slow on my end) it failed.

I decided at that time that I would actually start trying and I unplugged all my other USB and used a real apply usb cable as opposed to my long one.

I also updated iTunes to the latest version and hit the restore button in iTunes again.

After another extemely long DL (because turns out my old verison of iTunes downloaded 6.1.3) I tried again.

Error 1 or -1 depending on which time I tried.

I then checked my hosts file and it was good so I tried disconnecting the battery and hitting the power buton a bunch to drain the power and it still failed with error 1.

After maunally downloading the firmware from ipsw downloader i tried again but no results so I downloaded the alternate version of the software for GSM phones which was the incorrect version so didn't even start before it failed.

Frustrated at this point so I get a netbook and throw a fresh copy of windows 7 onto it.

Update all the drivers and various runtimes then installed latest verison of iTunes.

checked the hosts just to be stupid sure it would work and it was good.

    Error 1

So at this point I have waisted two days and I have alreadly replaced the clients phone as "I (meaning apple)" broke it.

So back on my main PC I start from square one and realise that I never actually cleared my DNS cache as it says in many instructions.

So I try that and 10 minutes later I got a brand new phone.

TLDR: Clear your DNS cache in Windows and Mac

Steps I used to fix it

    Apple brand charger

    back/motherboard usb port

    hosts file empty

    dns cache cleared

    dfu mode

Shift click restore button for custom ipsw file / latest version

To clear DNS cache in Windows hit the windows key or button in the bottom right (windows 7) and type CMD

Right click and run cmd as administrator

    type

    ipconfig /flushdns

I fixed mine after giving up so don't give up and don't feed the "unplug it" and "hit buttons at a certain point trolls".

    Good Luck.

I just spent some time playing with an iPhone 5 stuck in the update cycle with error 1. DFU mode, port switching and such did not help. In the end I noticed, that there was a little crud in the connector hole. Cleaning that out and turning the connector did the trick for me. Not sure whether this was really it or whether it was coincidence. But maybe it helps someone else but me Good Luck!

    Hello isa88,

I am in the same boat.

How long did it take to restore after the phone batter was discharged completely?

Also, did you charge the phone for sometime before restoring or directly connected to computer for restore?

I have the same problem. My iPhone 5 can't be restored, unknown error (12). This happened after getting a searching signal and then trying to update the OS.

Hello people am from cyprus . I bought an iphone 5c before 6 months ago and i hadnt updated ti for like 5 weeks since i didnt had internet at that time . Before 2 nights i saw that my battary was low so i put it to charge . After 5 hours i saw that it wasnt only not charging but it was saying searching. The iphone was very slow so i decided to restart it . Nothing happened . Was still searching . After i put it to charge on the laptop cause i thought the charger failed . No charging as well . ( it was saying it was charging but the bar didnt move at all above 5% ) . So i decided to update it . I downloaded the update pressed update now but my phone screen was locked ( dont know if that matters ) . it said it cannot do it because the screen is locked . so i pressed update again and took the iphone to unlock the screen but at the same time it shut down without put the whole code . After that the nightmares came stuck in recovery mode . Error 3 right at the restoring the firmware  Error 3 Error 3 sometimes i got error 1 . I dont have antivirus , my firewall is inactive , i tried unistall the itunes . and install it again . I even re downloaded the restore to factory but didnt help .

In the end i flashed the dns didnt help . so i put the cable in the other end ( i thought maybe am putting it wrong ) and now i got error 9
(now i found that the time on the router is wrong ) i hope that this is a fix

    Hello all!

I've the same problem, with an iPad 2 and when I was trying to update to the latest iOS 7.1.2.

The iPad is GSM version and had the mobile data disconnected because always was "searching..." for a cellular data when trying to restore. Now it's bricked and, of course, out of warranty.
