iPhone 5s Power Button Rattles

My iPhone 5s's power button makes a rattle noise. And no, it's not the camera lens. That makes a separate, distinct noise that isn't particularly annoying. That, and if I hold down the power button, the noise goes away.

My 4S doesn't have this issue. Everything is solid, including the camera lens (surprisingly, as one would expect that it can't be solid technically).

I wouldn't mind this rattle noise, except that it's audible during calls (both to me and the receiving party), as well as when recording videos (or anything else that records sound).

Anyone else having this issue? I just had my iPhone 5s replaced this morning due to interlacing lines on the screen, and the same thing persists on my new one. So I'm at peace of mind knowing that Apple just overall opted to use bad displays for their 5s line. But this power button rattle didn't exist on my previous 5s.

Its tough luck really, if you get a good one keep it, the rattle is on many phones and yes its very annoying I can here the click on my video recordings, and you may also find your compass and level are out too, but this is what happens when you get the first batches of new phones there will always be some that are faulty but first runs are notorious for faults, its called being at the bleeding edge of technology. As to the display would you prefer a pentile? Your option is to try exchanging it again of get a refund. The display is the same as on the 5 and that was fine, I guess it depends maybe which manufaturere you get.

I have this power button rattle problem on my iphone5 too. I read about people complaining about this when the 5 first came out. Some people even took it in thinking something is loose inside.

I just lived with it, because there's nothing wrong with my the wifi or cellular reception of my 5. The rattling sound is not as pronounced if I put fingers across the volume buttons and the power button. Putting the phone into a case that covers up the volumen and power button helps too.

That's not my concern, though. I couldn't care less if the phone made rattling noises as long as it works.

However, my gripe is that the rattling noise gets on calls and anything else that records sound (ex. video recording). Test it out; record a video while walking. The rattle noise is pronounced. I cannot tolerate an iPhone which cannot record video properly.

I went to the Apple Store earlier today to ask for a fix, remedy, or entire replacement.

The genius I talked to said that:

1. There is no fix to be had, since it's not an issue and it was "designed that way".

2. There is no remedy to stop the rattling since it's not an issue (once again).

3. Replacements cannot be given for this issue since, well, it's not an issue. It's "normal" and within specifications.

I proceeded to ask why my 4S didn't have this rattle, but my 5s does. How am I to record video while walking, running, or just moving about in whatever way I please? The genius's response was simple: Don't. No one records video in such a manner, and if you do, it's your problem, not Apple's.

I would have replied back that I could do all of the above perfectly fine with my 4S, but I had enough and realized it wasn't going to get me anywhere. I just thanked him bitterly and left.

Back at home, though, I contacted Apple Support through chat. Alex talked and sympathized with me, stating that he suffered from the same issue, but that Apple claims that it is within specifications (and thus, not an issue/defect). He offered solutions, such as putting a case on that limits the movement of the power button, or even using tape.

So basically, Apple refuses to acknowledge this as an issue, especially since it's a widespread one. All that talk about having sophisticated manufacturing processes to pick out the best fitting parts for each phone is total malarky.

Such emphasis placed on just how much more improved the camera is on the 5s compared to previous iterations, yet such a obvious issue is overlooked, rendering the video camera completely useless.

Apple designed the iPhone 5s this way. Yep; designed it to rattle. It was all part of the plan. And no one, absolutely no one, should ever use a video camera while moving around, cause it's just not normal.

I'll just go back to my HTC One for the time being. Perhaps with the next iPhone, Apple will actually take us abnormal people into consideration.

For anyone stumbling upon this post (presumably from searching the web about this rattle noise), here's a suggestion: do NOT buy the 5s for its video camera capabilities. It is entirely useless, as you cannot record footage without even a slight rattle noise in the video.

I love Apple, but this is too much.

Got the exact same problem.

Bloody rattling noise from the sleep button.

Maybe Apple will see it as a problem in the future once more people start complaining about it.

I went to the my local Apple store yesterday and tested all displayed iphone 5s'.

They all rattled.

It's an engineering problem that Jony Ive didn't even consider.

He must have been preoccupied with making nice casings....

Steve Jobs NEVER used a case on his iphone and never wanted Apple to sell one.

(Except when the antenna-gate problem appeared).

I feel that I ve spent lots of money on a children's rattle toy...

I have the exact same problem. My 5S makes this rattling sound, too. If I hold my finger on the power button, it stops. This wouldn't bother me if this sound would not be on recorded videos. But it is and it's very loud. And what I can't stand anymore is that a lot of people try to tell me that this isn't a big problem. For me it is! I payed 899 Euros for my 5S! I am a paramedic and really not rich. So I can demand a phone without any problems.

The support hotline here in Germany didn't want to exchange the phone. I really got angry and called the online store. The guy there send my a new 5S. It should arrive in two or three days, the e-mail said. I hope this one will work better.

But I read that a lot of people who exchanged their 5S got an new one with the same problems.

What is so diffucult about a better final inspection???? I mean, didn't the iPhone 5 have had enough problems?

So many problems with my 5S: a very loud clicking, sometimes not working home button (sounds like making clicks on a metal plate or so), an annoying power button and not or wrong working sensors (racing games are horrible to play). And all that for so much money. It really makes me sad (twice because it arrived on my birthday). And even if they replace it until I really have a good one, I don't wanna spend my life with exchanging iPhones. :-(

So please Apple, do something about it. 😮

You are so right.

I cannot imagine why they treat their customers this way.

Do they wanna end up like Nokia? :-(

I only use Apple products, Macbbok, ATV, iMac, 2 iPhones...

So, I mean, they have customers that are willing to pay so much money for their products, so they should treat them better than that.

I buy a phone to use it as it is, not to put cases or whatever around it.

And if it is within specs, why isn_t that pointed out in the tech specs on the homepage (1080p Video with ratlling when you move)? :-(

I can't believe that the guy talking to you was so rude...😟

Here is a nice example of the rattle from the power button, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNAu626qYIQ&feature=youtu.be

I have resorted to useing blue tak on the buttons (sleep and power) to stop it from doing this.. Obviously this was how apple intended the device to be..?

I have already changed the device at "Carphone Warehouse" here in the uk, when I exclaimed to the salesman that the one he was giving me as a replacement also rattled he said.. "They all do that this one is a bit better see how you get on with that." and "im not opening every phone in the store."

I will be back there next week to get a phone that does not rattle! I will not rest until I do, I am not paying close to £1000 on contract for a phone that I cant use to record video..

This was not the case with 4s, it worked flawlessly for the purpose, in the same mount and position as the above. If in doubt look through the other video's posted under that username on youtube.

If any Apple representitive is reading this then please offer up any solution or details of a recall of these rattling sub standard devices we have all been palmed of with.

I like many others would like to know when this issue will be resolved.

So, I got my third 5S today. It is the worst of the 5S I had. The rattling can even be heared when you make a call and walk while doing it. What the h...???? I send it back for good now and keep my 4S. I think if nothing changes, this was my last iPhone. It makes me sad cause I love the phones and iOS. But all these problems are not worth 899 Euros. 😟
